I actually need to look more into this. I have a better understanding of things from expansion to expansion with a few exceptions of ships (Acorazado) that have always stood out. Though I’ve mixed and matched over the years, when I used to play more than I do now I tried to work with the newest release simply because it was in fact new, again with a few exceptions. It wasn’t until later than I mixed sets and began looking at what worked best overall. I used to play some large fleet action games with friends where we would use duplicate ships as others in a “class” based on the namesake. I have notes somewhere I made on which ships worked best and to what end in my opinion.
In any case, I would agree with the analysis of 5-mast vessels. I have fond memories of some of the British and pirate heavy hitters, but the Spanish and frankly most other nations have at least one or two that are very enjoyable to play in their own right. For me the overall quality of ship type is dependent on how big a game is being played. If it’s a smaller game, most nations can bring something competitive to the table, if it’s a larger action, the strength of some nations for 5-mast vessels does drop off a bit to the point where it does begin to matter.
As for 2-3 mast vessels, I need to look into this some more as well. I have some I enjoy a lot for pirates, Britain and Spain, but it’s an area I’ve not given a ton of thought to as a group overall.

I have most non-punched cards and also a number of punched ones. Not yet sure if I plan to part with them as a group or singles, but in any case do we have anything on values for this set?

It seems there are some ships that are just drawn to me, over the years I’ve had a couple I seem to pull with astonishing frequency from packs. I would much prefer my extras go to those missing them as well. I actually have almost 2 complete sets of the Spanish Main series and I’m almost positive I have duplicates of both of those ships, the Bolingbroke for sure I believe. I was able to get most of the British and Pirate stuff in that set pretty easily in the day but a good number of the Spanish ships were hard to find. The one you’re after is a pretty highly sought ship from what I remember and I’m guessing that hasn’t changed. The one that caused me the longest search was the Revenant. Was able to get 2-3 Harbingers but never the Revenant in a pack. I had to make a decent trade to finally get my hands on one. As of current the Spanish Main series is the only one I have a full set of, but I’m very close with Oceans Edge. I have between 1/4-3/4 of most other sets, but have only a few ships from SCS, MI, FN, and POTC.

I try to buy just specifics when I do purchase something, but over the years of buying boxes and packs I’ve found myself in possession of a great many duplicates from rare to common, even some specials. Though basic crew can always be useful as duplicates, I’ve never had much use for the extra ships, thus as you’re saying, it would be wonderful to share, via trade or purchase, those vessels with others.

Following on introductions, I got into PotCS when it was first released with the original Spanish Main series. My friend had bought a pack and didn’t care for the game, threw it out, and I found it in his trash can and became immediately hooked. I’ve always enjoyed ships, the sea, and naval/military history, so the game became a natural fit.
I’ve always been a collector and player for certain games. When I started PotCS I was a 50/50 between collecting and playing. While the game was still hot and players easily found around my area I continued the 50/50 mix. As the game faded and dropped a bit from the mainstream I began to focus more on collecting. I had a sizable fleet that has only grown with time, the ultimate goal being one of every piece created.
My favorite part of the game has always come in a few facets. My first has always been the visual variety of the game, the number of unique artwork is wonderful. My second part comes in the fact that the creators were able to build a simple 3D game that was not only a joy to play, but a joy to build. My last favorite major aspect is the general ease in playing the game. With a single pack, one could learn not only the basics but also the complete rules with general ease, leaving them free to focus on personal strategy and tactics.
I can’t say I have previous aliases, simply venturing into a new area of long time love.
