It all depends on which of the two items you want more. If I wanted the other item and valued it more then the item I had, it would be a no brainier.
It is no different then swapping old car parts or any other collectible really π
April 21, 2019 at 5:39 PM #4319clm1977ParticipantAre you exploring a derelict ship, boarding an enemy ship, or just transferring cargo between your ships? There should likely be little to explore on a friendly cargo transfer.

I am thinking of using a bamboo skewer on a future for the masts one although the mast tabs into it fine. I just think a skewer would look more like a mast and but almost unbreakable π
The fore deck and upper deck are not cardboard. but the hull and main deck are… and all the slice marks in the top of my beat up desk π

April 19, 2019 at 3:44 PM #4299clm1977ParticipantI will give it a try eventually, it was just a brainstorm I had on the way home. Those are interesting ships there, mast saccing? I have been working to clean out a space to put a full sized 6 or 7 foot table to make a nice sized playmat π
I will probably make myself a proxy 10 master if my experiments in cardboard ships turn out π
April 19, 2019 at 10:49 AM #4296clm1977ParticipantI went back and read that wreck/adrift and i would say yes it is similar, but his seems aligned and part of the players fleet from the start as opposed to a treasure to race/win/fight over.
“The one part I donβt like is the free bonus for Mercenaries.”
Actually the old home island stays in play that is where the new ships would show up, hard to get enough materials on a ship to make new ships. As for the HI raiders, if they do store their gold on the ship they are risking anyone coming along and trying a boarding roll against them and taking their gold. It is even riskier to have it there then on the island, every ship is in essence a HI raider against it. And if you sail up with an armada and blow the ship into submission you get all of their gold for the price of a tow. It could just as well just be thematic to run your operations off of a home base ship like this for mercs, but by getting the ability to slowly move it they take a lot of risky chances using it that way. The only real bonus for them is that they can dock ships at it and transfer as much gold to it as they want, but it is very risky for them to do.

The derelict tag would function more akin to fort gold cost then build points, instead of buying it with gold you would have to salvage it with moves and time. It might actually get fought over while towing it home and could change hands multiple times in the tow.
As for the crew I would assume it would work in exactly the same way crew works now, if the crew is on the ship of the wrong nationality their abilities don’t work, although they could end up killed in the fight. I imagine you could add to the capturing of the ship that all crew perishes or becomes gold value.
And it is not really limit once, it is limit one. Only one derelict of a type could be in play at any one time across all players, although you could have a 1 mast and a 10 mast derelict as they are not the same ship, it would likely work based on ship type π
I feel it would add a fun new mechanic that is somewhat like a capture the flag gameplay. I don’t think it is too op. Maybe the minimum gun rank should be a 3 instead of 2, but I think I varied it a bit by making the rank taper from bow/stern to amidship. Better bigger more accurate guns in the middle and smaller less accurate guns at the ends.

April 19, 2019 at 1:13 AM #4278clm1977ParticipantI have not thought much about new custom ships until tonight as I drove home, I got to thinking about possible interesting mechanics that might be fun and came up with this, I tried not to over power it and gave it one faction specific ability. This ship literally starts unowned and without masts and must be towed to a home island to acquire (which is why it has n/a points), has a modified version of eternal, and can take any flag once salvaged. In addition to throw the mercs a bone, I have it a type of home island ability which makes it thematically somewhat of a mobile mothership for mercs. The reappearing part is to suggest that there was not one lost ship but many and each time it reappears it is in fact a new ship, and a keyword that would work on any number of ship types. The Raise the Colours(yes British spelling) I imagine on actual cards would have one card with a flag from every faction on it allowing you to change out the flag when you towed it to a home island, seemed an interesting and thematic mechanic, if a crew catches a ship they are not going to keep sailing under the old flag after all. π
The Derelict
Points N/A
Masts 10
Cargo 8
Movement L
Cannons 4s-3s-2l-2l-3l-3l-3l-3s-4l-4l
Flavor text: The Jade Rebellion sailed one of their mighty treasure ships into the strange overgrown seas looking for a shortcut to riches beyond but never returned. Her crew tore down the rigging for warmth and threw all the riches into the seas as offerings to any gods that would take pity on them for release from those wretched doldrums, a prayer that was in the end only answered in death.
Keywords
Junk: This shipβs own masts do not block its lines of fire.
Limit one per game
Derelict: Ships starts the game with 0 masts and crew floating in the middle of the ocean or in a Sargasso sea. Ship cannot be sunk except via fire and scuttling. Ship reappears 5 turns later in derelict state after it is removed from game by scuttling or fire.
Hoist the Colours: This ship starts unaligned with a faction and takes on the faction of the ship that successfully tows it to a home island, this faction can change upon capture by another player.
Home Base:If assigned a merc faction this ship can act as a mobile home island and assumes unlimited cargo capacity, if it has more cargo then listed capacity it is limited to s speed which can not be altered and can not move closer than L to any island. This ship can still be captured in this state and all current cargo is transferred to capturer, current crew is eliminated. It can only be assigned merc faction if crewed by a merc captain, captain must remain on ship. One mast may be repaired every other turn at sea only if Home Base keyword is active. Once Home Base is assigned it can only be removed by further capturing.

First box I opened was the ship with the most parts ‘fallen off’ managed to fish all the missing parts except for the black pennant on top out of the box, not only was the pennant missing but 024 Pioneer was missing the whole rear mast off the punch card… Drat indeed. However when I opened the next box which had a ship that had red pennants… it had the missing black pennant in the sealed box.. WTF? lol. Had some decent pulls for those next two boxes, but on the last box with Seattle in it I pulled the 3 SR cards like woot and stuff, although why would a generic captain card be a super rare? That is quite lame. π
Next month I am going to buy a small pile of OE megas from hills and try to get the other 3 big cards I need.

A creative person might even be able to modify building styles to take into account of the fact you can bend card stock more.
As for the collectible statement, there will be little need to trade when you can print and make your own any time you want. The older stuff will hold up the collectible nature of the game as the original styrene will be harder to get and more expensive π
I wonder what materials Ben has tried myself. I wonder if the durable plastic from something like a sterilite tote with graphics glues on or a decal might take a bit more abuse then styrene.
But as to the topic of this thread, there would likely not need to buy any rights to come up with a simple fan art diy style that you could make many ships in a afternoon with basic materials.

April 14, 2019 at 6:20 PM #4232clm1977ParticipantWhat about a way to DIY ships, I imagine some paper printed out and glued to a nice cardstock could make some nice sturdy ships. In fact cardstock would just not randomly break like the styrene… you could not however store it in a cup of water π
Imagine new “expansions” of the game instead of packs you buy but a picture pack you download and print out. A bit of DIY to build them, and play. The older ships could be the collectible part of the game with perhaps some of the created sold to less handy players?
If you didn’t have the card stock you could glue/laminate several sheets of poster board together to thicken it up enough.
I could imagine proxy ships could be made in this fashion as well if you don’t want to punch a rare ship.

April 13, 2019 at 8:42 PM #4223clm1977ParticipantOh, I have parts of DJC 135 super rare Mistwalker, I have the deckplate head and two loops. I am missing the water oval the tail and second card blank.
Either I am needing the tail and water oval of Mistwalker.. or I have the parts available for someone who might need some.

April 13, 2019 at 10:41 AM #4221clm1977ParticipantAhh a parts thread
Biggest parts I am looking for at the moment is a set of empty deckplates for a djc SE boneyard.
And I have a small pile of beaters ships if someone wants them, they are all missing masts or parts here and there.

April 6, 2019 at 8:51 PM #4123clm1977ParticipantSo do I.. I think I may have over-complicated myself getting tubs full of ships and cards and am now confused where to start lol…
Well that is other then start looking for places to not go broke getting more stuff for it π
I have been downloading various pdf rulesets I have found around here and other sites. we will see how it goes. I am a few episodes through your hourly campaign series…

April 6, 2019 at 2:48 PM #4121clm1977ParticipantHello there,
I recently got introduced to this game by finding a box of ships and cards sat on the top shelf of a local Goodwill. I found the first small storage tote a week back and dug into it sorting and recarding what I could so the mass of ships were not overbearing. It seemed to be primarily davys curse with some mysterious islands. A few days after that I went back and found another tote which when sorted into the first set seemed to be the other half of the persons collection.
Out of all of it there is nearly a complete set of curse with a good pile of mysterious island.. all for the low low price of $16 heh. I have so far put more into that buying some missing cards on ebay… and a value box that just showed up today that was still sealed and missing the punched cards for the Boneyard out of the sealed box. Grrr :p Everything was still in place and sealed other then that.
I am still learning and reading up all these rules and watching csg stuff on the tube, man I wish I had found this stuff EARLIER lol.
