Once again inspired by the “What kind of Pirate are you?” insert.
Do you:
-Collect a specific faction?
-Collect only certain sets?
-Focus on acquiring certain ship types above all others?
-Focus on getting singles no matter the price in order to whittle down your wants list?
-Focus on buying lots and going for quantity of quality?
-Focus on trading over buying?
-Prefer to buy packs or specific items/lots that you can see what’s in them?
Other variations accepted, and I can add them to this post.
What kind of Collector are you?
I have been most of the above at one point or another, but in general I would say I’m a deal or price focused collector who is mostly satisfied at this point (not complete of course). I focused on Spanish Main until I had the full C/U/R set. I love the English, and 5 masters, so they dominated some of my trade requests in 2011/2012 when I didn’t have nearly as much stuff. I’ve overpaid (in terms of the prices back then, not so much now) out of desperation a few times, including $8 for the Banshee’s Cry and $10 for HMS Endeavour. In general though I’ve almost always preferred sheer quantity for the lowest price per ship possible. Early on I loved buying packs, but generally prefer lots since the early days of my collecting. I’ve done over 100 trades, which is a great way to save money and whittle down haves and wants simultaneously.
November 5, 2019 at 1:46 PM #10088XerecsModeratorI’m more of a player than a collector, but I have focused on collecting from a certain set, and a certain faction; those being every Spanish piece from SM (named crew and ships only), and every Cursed piece from DJC (again, named crew and ships only). When I do go looking for pirates stuff, I almost always go looking for big lots at a decent price with lots of ships. I don’t find them often, but I keep my eyes open.
I don’t usually go for trades. I think I had maybe a dozen or so trades completed before MT went down, and a good half of those were “sales” and not true trades.

Always been willing to go overboard on collecting Pirates. Buy a large lot for needing 2-3 ships. Buy a box when a pack will do. Or a case when a box would.
Most lately has been restocking packs for draft play. Down to the last 35ish singles for a full unpunched set (including all LE/SE/promo) so trades and buys are getting rare. Started making a list of needs for a play/punched set so maybe I’ll start small trades again soon.
I’ve always made sure that if I bought a lot, it had something I needed for sure. I leave the randomness to draft pack play.
November 6, 2019 at 2:12 PM #10108WoelfModeratorI always tried to get complete sets, or at least as close to that as possible without spending a fortune on eBay or wherever for specific items. Trading took care of most of the regular set stuff, and any extras like LE/SE/promo items were always targets of opportunity that I’d try to get when possible, but wouldn’t worry too much about if they were too hard to come by. I never saw a need to keep more than one copy of any given named item, and only kept duplicates around for trading purposes. However, I always did make sure to have a few extra copies of each type of generic crew for every faction, especially for the nations that only appeared in one or two sets.
By the time I stopped actively buying/trading, my overall collection was up to around 95% complete. There are only a handful of things from the first few and the last few sets missing, maybe a third of the PotC set that I don’t have, and of course some of the high-end ultra rare/expensive things like Chum Maker.
June 5, 2020 at 7:37 PM #11041DonParticipantI just got back into the game and received 51 SM packs and 36 CC packs form ebay then bought what i was needing from RainTiger to get playable sets for a 50 point game for Pirates, English, Spanish, French, Cursed and American… that’s all I collect, not going for a complete set just playable factions. did not like DJC, except cursed that I liked or BC, MI, FN, FS or SS did not get into them like I did with the first 3 sets.

Unlimited should have a UL in front of the card number. Pictures here.
June 22, 2020 at 6:33 AM #11122AGiantPieParticipantMy goal is to get as many unique ships as possible so I can use them to play huge campaign games!!!!…. eventually. I’m not picky as to the type of ship really. A common is just as good on my game table as a super rare. For that reason I’m mostly interested in cheap lots. My collection is fairly substantial already (and I’m currently sorting through it all) so I might have to pivot at some point to trading or buying the occasional single that I don’t have. But for now I just want more game pieces, especially crew.

I love it!! I didn’t know you were so interested in campaign games!

That reminds me of my strategy when I got back into the game in 2011-2012.
I wish you great luck on your quest(s), and look forward to possibly hearing about them someday! 😀
August 20, 2020 at 8:31 PM #11846GigiParticipantInitially I try to find a few sealed packs of each set, just to see what I get and because it’s fun. I go to online lots and direct sales after that.
Ben’s set reviews are great and I use them to find which ships sound interesting. Luckily it seems that rare does not necessarily equate to being the best ship in a set. Lots of solid uncommons and commons.More of a player than a collector.

Thank you for checking those out!

Indeed. It’s one of my favorite aspects of the game. I also like how you can get more than one rare in a pack.

On the flip side its a crest fall when you get those duplicates! Ha
