Ben suggested that I ask here and hopefully Holofernes, Woelf, or Old_Man might know.

I came across a pack of PotSM that has “Promo edition” in the circle on the lower left of the foil. The info on the back makes it look like this is a European pack (it’s from a seller in Sweden) but the packaging is in English. Additionally it DOESN’T say “of the Spanish Main” under the logo, and  says “Special Pack” where normal packs say “Game Pack”.

Anyone know anything about what might be in here, or where it came from?

I can’t recall ever seeing one labeled as a “Promotion Edition”, but then again I never really paid much attention to that.

Spanish Main did have a set of “Ghost Ships”, but I’m pretty sure they were never distributed in packs like this, plus there were a lot more of them than what would fit in a single pack.

It’s possible this is one of the Euro/UK versions with the alternate starter rules, but those were usually packaged the same as normal packs, not as promos. The non-standard logos as you pointed out are odd too.

Unless one of the crazy collectors like Old_Man knows, the only way to find out what’s going on may be to open it.

Any chance of back of pack picture as well?

That is wild.  Seems like it must be quite rare if nobody so far has even seen anything like it.  (also seems too early to start an April Fool’s joke :p )

I just PM’d Holofernes and old_man to alert them to this mystery!

Here are some photos. It feels like there are only 2 cards in here plus 2 islands.

The back has some text: “Promotional use only, not for resale.” It has a Danish (Copenhagen) address and mentions Enigma Distribution. The URL now resolves to the Nordic Asmodee website.

The “instructions” on the back of the pack translate as “Build ships, find treasures and sink your enemies ships. Contains 2 ships and islands. from 8 years”

I’d be interested to know if anyone from the Nordic countries has an idea what ships are in here.

Thank you for the additional information!  That is a very thin pack.

I should have realized this because it’s a vertical artwork pack unlike the first edition horizontals, but the copyright date of 2005 confirms that it’s unlikely or impossible to be a prerelease type thing.  So interesting.  Makes me wonder if it’s a European-based demo pack – meant for Envoys/etc to open in front of people to garner interest.

Someone on Facebook mentioned that they remember getting a promo pack of some kind in a Swedish magazine. I remember something about a rare island that was only available in a European magazine, but I can’t find a mention of that island anywhere (and it’s hard to search on “Pirates CSG rare island”). Does anyone know more about what I’m talking about?

I found the reference I was thinking of, in the Wikipedia article on the game:

    “<span style=”color: #222222; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px;”>2006 – </span><i style=”color: #222222; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px;”>Two Home islands</i><span style=”color: #222222; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px;”> released with the “Donald Duck & Co. #26″ (Kalle Anka) comic magazine only in Scandinavia on 7/20/06 – these packs contained two ships (</span><i style=”color: #222222; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px;”>El Cazadora</i><span style=”color: #222222; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px;”> & </span><i style=”color: #222222; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px;”>Glorious Treasure</i><span style=”color: #222222; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px;”>, both identical to their English releases), a paper slip of treasure coins to cut out, rules, and two cardboard islands which are labelled “Home” on one side. Due to their limited distribution, these two islands are highly prized by completist collectors and quite hard to come by.”

I wonder if this is what this pack is? Do we know who added this entry to the wiki page?</span>

Great point.  That seems like the most likely possibility as of now, especially because two 1 card ships and two islands is what you think the pack contains.  However, putting them in an SM pack that says copyright 2005 is interesting, since one of the ships is from 2006 (SCS).

Holofernes did a ton of the Wikipedia page, and like I said I’ve messaged him about this topic.

If it is the Scandinavian Islands pack, you’ve got something very rare.  Though I was thinking it might be a 1 of 1 promotional/prototype thing.

If you don’t mind me asking, did you get it in an eBay lot?

One “solution” is to track down a copy of the actual magazine and hope that the contents are intact.  😀

In 2017 or 2018 I did some research and was able to find some information.  I think the first link originally went to a page where you could potentially buy the issue, but it looks like they’ve already changed their website since then.

Donald Duck? (Scandinavian home islands) (others from 2006) (issue)

Not in an eBay lot, just a single “buy it now” item on eBay. I snagged it as soon as I saw the difference in packaging. It wasn’t cheap, for a single pack with 2 ships, but it seems like it’s pretty rare even if the contents are just reprints of other ships.

Seems as though the mystery may be solved… I’m so glad I saved this picture from old_man that he posted to Miniature Trading a while back:
