Hi all! I haven’t been on any Pirates forums in a while but I still love this game, and I was very sad to see that Miniature Trading would be shutting down very soon. This is a sad week, it seems (what with Etika’s terrible fate).
I was wondering, then: what articles have we saved with screenshots? Is there a repository or database? What are we missing? We also have a database of all the ships, right? I recall reading that somewhere, I hope I’m right.
And is there anything else that needs to be done before Miniature Trading finally dies?

Here is an Imgur folder with the MT thread pictures I’ve saved. Soon I’m going to make a site post here with links to all of the different stuff I’ve saved. As I talked about last year, the database and miniature pictures have all been saved. (that thread has basically ALL my progress updates along with lists of what’s been saved/etc)

Everyone can save their own fleets, Miniature Reviews, profiles, and whatever else they want. Beyond that, you can save old threads if you want along with other people’s fleets and/or reviews if you want. Hopefully it won’t die someday too, but you can also plug in URL’s to the Wayback Machine to save them there.

June 27, 2019 at 10:48 AM #6538WoelfModeratorThe searchable reference database will be by far the biggest loss, at least as far as non-personal items are concerned. Is that something that could eventually be recreated here, or on an attached website? Obviously it would take a ridiculous amount of work to set back up, so it wouldn’t be anything happening any time soon.
In my opinion, the gold standard for a searchable miniatures database has always been Warrenborn:
http://www.warrenborn.com/UnitSection.html
That only covers Mechwarrior, but it was better than MT’s database and even the old WK one. A similar setup for Pirates would be an amazing tool to have available after MT is fully gone.June 27, 2019 at 10:59 AM #6540BenKeymasterThe searchable reference database will be by far the biggest loss, at least as far as non-personal items are concerned. I’ve thought about it and talked about it a bit, but it’s yet another big project. For now the Master Spreadsheet is decent. It’s not as convenient or easy to use as the MT searchable database, but you can use ctrl+f to find specific stuff and you can enable filter views to sort by mast count/base move/etc.
You can also go to Edit>Find and Replace (ctrl+h) to search all the sheets at once. (for example, a specific ship name)

I gave it the full page treatment here. I’m pretty sure I have all of my “best content” that I created, so anything major is almost definitely saved. Tons of it has already been reposted here, and Game Ideas can be found in the Best Posts widget now seen on most of the site’s sidebars. (not the forum one since I want to keep that forum-specific I think, with the exception of Recent Posts)

I just tried it with a capture of the original Custom Ships Organized Version thread (nearly 3MB with a ton of text) and it worked. Doesn’t preserve the formatting but at least an option.

Wow, nice! Even without the formatting, that’s really useful. Thanks!

Now that I’m using it a little to get Godmason’s customs in the Customs Database, I’m finding random errors. Sometimes full words or cannons are missing from a post, so it’s not nearly a perfect conversion even as far as the text goes. However, I converted one of the biggest screenshots (Custom Ships Organized Version) so perhaps the sheer volume is the reason for some of the errors.
October 14, 2020 at 10:54 AM #12337BenKeymasterThe classic 2011 facebook message from Lax Chandra thread. This one was quite the big deal for a while.

October 30, 2020 at 1:32 PM #12698November 17, 2020 at 11:56 PM #12927BenKeymasterI have completed the project of republishing Miniature Trading Forum Threads as full-width pages. You can find them all in that category; the individual posts are a bit wider and easier to read.
