@Xerecs: Thanks for the feedback and compliments!

    Waltz
    Type: Ship
    Faction Affiliation: French
    Rarity: SE
    Point Value: 24
    Number of Masts: 6
    Cargo Space: 5
    Base Move: L
    Cannons: 4L-4S-3L-3L-4S-4L
Ability: Junk. Parley. L-range cannons cannot hit this ship.

Flavor text: Truly an oddity, this rare French junk is constantly confusing enemies. She is slow but evasive, jovial but also deadly. The Waltz does have some musicians aboard, but they are mostly for show. The ship is simply hard to corner, and hard to justify attacking.

    El Perseguidor
    Type: Ship
    Faction Affiliation: Spanish
    Rarity: C
    Point Value: 13
    Number of Masts: 3
    Cargo Space: 3
    Base Move: S+S+S
    Cannons: 2L-4S-4S
    Ability: Galley. Hoard.
    Link: Luis de la Concepción

Flavor text: Although “The Pursuer” has a similarly gold-based metric for success like many other Spanish vessels, she differs in attributes. One of the fastest galleys ever built, she is designed more for catching enemy vessels than simply ferrying valuables. Her captain prefers to keep her light and her namesake proud.

    Luis de la Concepción
    Type: Crew
    Faction Affiliation: Spanish
    Rarity: U
    Point Value: 9
    Ability: Captain. S-Board. Chainshot Specialist.
    Link: El Perseguidor

Flavor text: Ready to die for Spain at every given moment, Luis de la Concepción stops at nothing to improve the performance of his galley and her crew. Never satisfied with the work done by those he commands, Capitan Luis prefers to perform the most important tasks himself. That includes leading zealous boarding parties from the rigging, and manning the cannons himself to shoot the key chain shot that leaves an enemy ship crippled.

Not much cargo on the Perseguidor to take advantage of the Hoard ability. She’s nice and fast though, reminds me of the Amity from CC. He cannons are a little wonky, though I do like the ‘bow chaser’ 2L.

Would Luis be able to use his chain shot from that bow cannon, or would he still need to have a target within S? I like his flavor text, sounds like a dedicated (and possibly overzealous) soul.

    P.S. Huzzah, I see a page function!

Would Luis be able to use his chain shot from that bow cannon, or would he still need to have a target within S?

Still within S, Chain Shot is what allows full range.  I have added the various specialist crew titles and their full ability texts under the keywords tab to minimize confusion.  The truly new ones (Grapeshot Specialist and Grappleshot Specialist) were already there, but your comment reminded me that I should add the regular ones too since I prefer to abbreviate them.  There may be some inconsistencies in the naming of “Grapeshot” vs. “Grape Shot” Specialists, etc.  I suppose one word makes sense due to how the Chainshot Specialist was worded before the associated equipment was released.

Anyway, onto (yet another) 10 master!!  XD  I suppose you could say I’ve “jumped the shark”, but perhaps I did that a long time ago with this set too.

    Stormcloud
    Type: Ship
    Faction Affiliation: Pirate
    Rarity: LE
    Point Value: 47
    Number of Masts: 10
    Cargo Space: 5
    Base Move: L
    Cannons: 3L-3L-4S-4S-4S-4L-4L-4L-4S-4S
Ability: Junk. Fog Hopper. [If this ship ends her turn in a fog bank, on her next turn she may use her move action to move out of any other fog bank in play.] This ship ignores storm terrain. If this ship is within S of a storm, she gets +1 to her d6 rolls.
    Link: Robert Alcantara

Flavor text: When lightning strikes, it is said that Zeus is near. Lately it has been this behemoth, gliding out of dismal weather to surprise both navy vessels and coastal towns. The crew’s goals are not known, but perhaps the Stormcloud’s reign of dominance is just beginning.

    Robert Alcantara
    Type: Crew
    Faction Affiliation: Pirate
    Rarity: LE
    Point Value: 10
Ability: Captain. EA. [Extra Action: Once per turn, roll a d6. On a 5-6, this ship may be given an extra action.] If this ship is within S of a storm when this ship is given a move action, she gets +S to her base move. This ship cannot remain docked on consecutive turns.
    Link: Stormcloud

Flavor text: Seemingly “normal” by most modern accounts, Alcantara has lived an extraordinary life. Although the details are muddled, he has ended up captain of one of the most feared and unique vessels on the ocean. Teaching every single crewmember his exemplary discipline, Captain Alcantara has made the Stormcloud a monster. Preferring to never go into port for fear of crew laziness and ship capture, wild weather on the high seas is his comfort zone.

I’m slightly bored by the captain’s name, but I do want him to have a relatively normal sounding name, unlike most of the other 10 master captains. XD Especially considering that storm terrain has mostly just been used by Xerecs’ playgroup, the Stormcloud’s only big calling card is the Fog Hopper ability. That ability is OP by default on a ship so large, so I deliberately just blew up her cost to some massive level. If need be I may increase it further. XD

As I’ve said before, combining Captain with SAT or EA is pretty much OP to some extent by default. However, I hope the high cost of Alcantara (as opposed to leaving him at 8 for basic Captain+EA) and his somewhat severe drawback (very difficult to hide at home or to repair without a Shipwright) will allow him to function without breaking the game. I actually really like his negative ability because it limits him while perfectly blending with his flavor text – he’d rather be off sailing through a storm than docked at an island. If he someday proves to still be OP, I may change the EA to only working on a roll of 6, replace it with Helmsman instead, or simply give him “this ship cannot dock”, period. However, as of now it would cost about 60 points to have a basic setup of this combo (assuming helmsman and probably oarsman) working properly.

Very interesting. Fog hopping on such a large ship is indeed powerful and should not be cheap. however, given the rest of the ships stats, I feel you could come down to 40 points. If only because Storms don’t get used often, even by me! Therefore, to my way of thinking, it would be difficult to get that +1 to d6 rolls ability to kick in, and the same on Alcantara. Speaking of, I think he’s fine at 10, given how difficult it might be to get that +S when within S of a storm.

I hear you, but the argument could be made that fog hopping on a 10 master is a bad idea for the game.  I’d much rather overprice the ship than have her be OP out of the gate (or storm in this case XD).  It would be so easy to just add Bruce Grey for 4 points and make her that much more devastating.  I’m trying to take my crazy powerful customs seriously, so I want to price them high enough.  I agree that the storm-based abilities don’t add much to her cost, but Fog Hopper should scale in cost to the size of the ship.  In this case it’s almost as close as one can get to a ballistic missile bomb weapon.

    Darina
    Type: Crew
    Faction Affiliation: Viking
    Rarity: C
    Point Value: 5
    Ability: Captain. Shipwright.

Flavor text: Darina is seeking more than just bloodshed and glory on the high seas. She aims to pilot her vessel all the way to America, where the Spanish Silver Fleet is rumored to be mothballed. For added redundancy, she has trained herself in repair operations in case her shipwright is lost en route.

Oooh. I like the Crystal Shroud. It sounds cool, and has an interesting function, I’d probably use it on a heavyweight named crew, or what I’d consider the most important named crew on a gunship. Might be difficult in that respect, since big gunships usually get built to the point limit.

Indeed; perhaps it would work for named crew that have multiple abilities that are so good they don’t require many other crew to be on the ship.  Such as Stern, Victor de Alva from F&S, sac captains, etc.

Might as well put the “epic” in Epic Seas! XD

Whoa, talk about an epic ship indeed! There’s quite a lot I like about this ship, namely her speed. Set up right, she’d make a perfect ‘striker’ gunship, more than capable of getting the first hit in on any ship. I also like Dories, I think it should be on more ships, and not just mercenary ships. The bow and stern chaser cannons are quite interesting, especially if Power Cannons found their way onto her. Since the chain shot is not limited to S, you could use those bow and stern cannons to shoot a chain shot at L+L range!

Van Damme is cool, and makes for an interesting combo on his own ship, since he won’t take up cargo space, and add one because of his link, giving the ME a total of 5 cargo to stash stolen goodies in.

I like this Queen’s Ghost, combining Ghost ship with a high base move is always fun to see. I also like her home island aiding ability, though I’m upset she doesn’t have more cargo. I suppose giving her more would make her more expensive though, and she’s already fairly expensive for a two mast ship.

I know this is kind of a “dumb” ability to put on a custom. I’m thinking that if you sandwiched it between enemy gunships it would be sunk in short order. Willing to change it to something like 1 enemy ship within S, or maybe the nearest ship regardless of allegiance.

    Alonso Guños
    Type: Crew
    Faction Affiliation: Spanish
    Rarity: C
    Point Value: 6
Ability: Captain. Island treasure trading. [After looking at treasure on a wild island, you may trade any one treasure from that island for a random treasure on any other wild island. This ship must load the traded treasure.] Ship treasure trading. [Once per turn, if this ship carries treasure and is within S of an enemy ship, you may randomly trade one treasure with that ship.]
    Link: Luz de Vida

Flavor text: Alonso is a sailor’s sailor. Having simply risen through the ranks from age 18 to 30, he knows what every position on the ship feels like. This gives him an edge in his operations, which are mostly related to commerce.

Ability: Captain. Explorer. This ship gets +1 to her boarding rolls against French ships.
Link: HMS Weazel, HMS Perseverance, James Cook

That boarding bonus isn’t really even worth a full point, but Captain+Explorer for 4 is just one of those combos that shouldn’t really exist in my opinion. (I may also make him worse since he’s still kinda “gamey” in a way, but at least he’s not part of a better gold running faction.)

Alright, here comes a massive combo that started with the set of native canoes and was recently wrapped up (for now? 🙂 ) with the full combo of pieces.

    Gravedigger’s (Death) Sentence
    Type: Ship (canoes)
    Faction Affiliation: Pirate
    Rarity: U
    Point Value: 11
    Number of Masts: 1
    Cargo Space: 1
    Base Move: S+L
    Cannons: 2S
    Ability: Native Canoe. Crew Killing.

Flavor text: This batch of canoes are crewed by gravediggers of the Caribbean. Unhappy with their lifestyle of slavery, they have taken to the seas to put bodies in graveyards themselves rather than waiting for the Reaper to give them a job to do. Rastarius Cain has taken them all the way to the Pacific, where they mix well with the native tribes and their own fleets of war canoes.

    Rastarius Cain
    Type: Crew
    Faction Affiliation: Pirate
    Rarity: R
    Point Value: 14
Ability: Captain. Chieftain (Gravedigger’s Death Sentence).
    Link: Warring Tribes, Mao Tiki

Flavor text: Rastarius Cain was a slave in Jamaica when a man named Philomela Yaqob broke him out of that hellish life. Commanding former slaves, he heard about the “exodus to the Pacific”, and decided to join the fray. Along the way he picked up a useful Chinese man skilled in the martial arts.

    Warring Tribes
    Type: Ship
    Faction Affiliation: Pirate
    Rarity: R
    Point Value: 22
    Number of Masts: 5
    Cargo Space: 3
    Base Move: S+S+S
    Cannons: 2S-2S-2S-2S-2S
Ability: Galley. This ship’s cannon ranges cannot be increased. If this ship is not assigned Rastarius Cain, she gets -1 to her cannon rolls.
    Link: Rastarius Cain, Mao Tiki

Flavor text: One of the most unique sights on the increasingly crowded Pacific Ocean, this ship has had her lower gun deck replaced with a rowing deck. The ship was already fast; with a full complement of oarsmen, she has become the fastest man-o-war of the modern age. The seasoned crew have maintained the ship’s firepower with a combination of constant gunnery training and a high number of devastating carronades. Her captain, Rastarius Cain, has become a favorite of the local natives in Oceania.

    Mao Tiki
    Type: Crew
    Faction Affiliation: Pirate
    Rarity: C
    Point Value: 6
Ability: S-Board. This ship gets +1 to her boarding rolls.
    Link: Warring Tribes, Rastarius Cain

Flavor text: After 31 years in mainland China learning how to fight for his life and country, Mao Tiki escaped the press gang and never stopped running. Picked up on Taiwan by former slave Rastarius Cain, he has formed an unlikely partnership that has proven lucrative – and dangerous for their enemies. With Cain leading his speedy makeshift galley and Tiki teaching the crew how to fight even without swords, the Warring Tribes looks to be one of the hardest ships to capture in the East.

Wow, some interesting combos for sure. I’m tying to imagine what a five mast ‘galley’ would look like. I’m assuming its basically a 5 with slots for oars, and retains all the other abilities of a galley, such as inability to be pinned, and the stern turn. Hmmm. If anyone wanted to try and construct it, they could even try to have the masts set at an angle, or use galley masts set at a regular angle for a five.

By the look of it, you could probably fill out a full forty point fleet with just these pieces alone, giving you an interesting gunship, and some very fast canoes to grab some golden goodies, even if you could try and optimize them for combat.

I see that Cain and the Canoes have different point costs, which confuses me a little. The chieftain crew is supposed to assume the full cost of the canoes, so shouldn’t the canoes also be 14 points, or should Cain be 11?

The Warring Tribes would just look like a regular 5 mast, but preferably with a large set of oars on both sides if made in real life.

I see that Cain and the Canoes have different point costs, which confuses me a little. The chieftain crew is supposed to assume the full cost of the canoes, so shouldn’t the canoes also be 14 points, or should Cain be 11?

Cain also has Captain, which has to cost 3 points.  He is still assuming their full cost of 11, but has an additional ability on top of that.  I know it’s a little funky, but I like playing with the idea of named chieftains to spice up the canoes and flavor a bit (similar to the God Chieftain of the “tribal mercenaries”).

Hmmm, that would confuse me in a game.

You simply pay 14 points for Cain and the canoes; you’re paying 11 for the canoes and 3 for the Captain ability.  Captain can’t be free, but there’s no reason to make the canoes too expensive just because Cain is a very capable chieftain.

But it’s not currently my turn…….?

It has been since February 23rd.  Sometimes I feel bad about nudging you guys, but I can’t feel bad anymore when it seems like I’m the only one who knows what’s going on.

    Link: Vordictus

Flavor text: The crew of the Devil’s Slaughter are, predictably, only interested in killing. They have taken it too far even for the Cursed, slaughtering their own whenever they make landfall.

    Link: Devil’s Slaughter

Flavor text: Evil on sight, Vordictus has been one of the main lieutenants of Maorithil before obtaining his own ship. Although not as crazed and maniacal as his crew, he nevertheless does absolutely nothing to stop them from committing atrocious acts and murdering thousands of innocents.

Yikes, I would not want to be boarded by that thing. The fist five cannons are decent, if S range, and after that they’re not so good, essentially making this a 5 mast ship with a +5 boarding built in. I think the low cargo (for a ten) will help keep this from getting overly unfair, as will the extraordinary high cost.

Flavor text: Of Greek descent, this wise middle-aged man is both a scholar and a warrior. His strategic expertise has lately allowed the Vikings to thrive in the North Atlantic, beating off their enemies with more confidence than ever before.

I know this is a bit OP to put on a custom, but he’s at a 2 point premium and the Vikings have almost no way to get extra actions, so hopefully it could work out OK. I could change the AA to Roberto Santana’s “global cannon bonus” ability.

Considering how bereft the Vikings are for extra actions, I don’t think this Paladin is OP. He seems like a leader crew, perfect for campaigns.
