    Hello, all…. ??
    It’s…been a while ?

I’m not gonna lie: I’ve been slacking on writing custom flavor texts, and I just haven’t been doing it ?

    So…
Today will be a double post to hopefully make up for that ?

So here we go: the continuation of Spain in Seas of Doom!!

    Important Keywords:

    1. Man-O’-War: Once per turn, before you give this ship a shoot action, roll a d6. On a result of an odd number, her cannons become 2-rank for this turn. On a result of an even number, she eliminates two masts with each hit.

    2. World-Hater: This ship gets plus one to her cannon rolls against any ship of a different nationality.

    3. EA: Once per turn, roll a d6. On a 5-6, give this ship an extra action.

    (continuing with numbers 3-6)

    3. El Arcángel
    Points: 22
    Masts: 4
    Cannons: 3L,3S,3S,3L
    Cargo: 4
    Base Move: S+S
    Ability: Man-O’-War
    Link: Santiago de Valentín

Flavor: One of Spain’s newest and most powerful battleships, the Arcángel has been given to Capitán de Valentín in the hopes that he will continue to bring honor and fame to the Spanish navy.

    4. Santiago de Valentín
    Points: 7
    Ability: Captain. World-Hater.
    Link: El Arcángel

Flavor: The son of a rich Spanish noble, Santiago plans on becoming the next best thing in Spain’s naval history since Victor De Alva. Much to the disgust of almost every other Spanish sailor, Valentín’s arrogant attitude has only brought him fortune and success.

    5. La Reina del Mar
    Points: 13
    Masts: 3
    Cannons: 2S,3L,2S
    Cargo: 5
    Base Move: L
    Ability: Shipwright.

Flavor: The Queen of the Sea; a fine vessel owned by a wealthy merchant, her crew has learned to repair any damages she receives in her travels, as they happen. They keep a surplus repair equipment on board at all time in an unused section of her cargo hold.

    6. Diego san Román
    Points: 8
    Ability: Hostile: America. Captain. EA.

Flavor: San Román is a practical man. One who has come to terms with the fact that America, not the dark forces of the undead, are a real threat, and must be given the full attention of the Spanish armada.

That’s all for this post; I might post again later today, and for sure tomorrow.
@Ben: in my last post I suggested that Xerecs Play-test a piece, and in retrospect, it does sound/look weird. However, to explain myself there, I do not have Vassal on my computer, and therefore can’t play-test on my own. I do not know if/when I will acquire Vassal, but until I do, I will be depending on Xerecs for play-test results. My statement in my previous post was not meant to seem mean or with attitude. I just simply can’t play-test myself.

As always, feel free to leave comments, concerns, and suggestions about these pieces. I will try to respond as soon as I can.

    Until next post

    The Finisher
    Faction Affiliation: Cursed
    Rarity: C
    Type: Ship
    Point Value: 9
    Number of Masts: 3
    Cargo Space: 2
    Base Move: S+S
    Cannons: 3L-4L-4L
Ability: This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against targets without all their masts. This ship gets +2 to her cannon rolls against targets with no masts remaining.

Flavor text: Although she will never be one of the preeminent Cursed warships, the crew of “The Finisher” take great delight in savagely killing and drowning enemies who are in dire straits.

    Hello again, all
Back today for two more Spanish pieces from PTSD ?

    7. El Resuelto
    Points: 16
    Masts: 4
    Cannons: 2S,2S,2S,2S
    Cargo: 2
    Base Move: L
Ability: Cannoneer. For each ship this ship sinks, she gets +1 to her cannon rolls.

Flavor: As her name would suggest, The Resolute will remain unwavering in her efforts to defend and protect her home.

    8. La Serenata
    Points: 12
    Masts: 3
    Cannons: 3S,3L,3S
    Cargo: 3
    Base Move: L+S
Ability: Friendly ships within L of this ship get +S to their base move.

Flavor: The Serenade is a fast ship, and often an encouragement for other ship captains to match her speed, lest they be left behind to whatever trouble follows her and her reckless captain.

Feel free to leave comments and opinions about these pieces if you have them. we are approaching the halfway point of the Spanish from Seas of Doom! ?
I’ll probably post again later today here or in the Mongoose Tavern.

    Until next post,

Serenata is too cheap. She should be about 5 to 6 points more.

I’m not sue how I feel about the Resuelto, her cannons are already very good.

@Xerecs: I could swap the Resuelto’s second ability with that of a different, currently unreleased ship to just make her a pirate-hater?

And the point cost of the Serenata can be raised. You suggest 18 points?

I don’t think people will learn to associate the letters “PTSD” with your custom set.  I would use “SoD” for Seas of Doom, or PotSoD.

El Resuelto’s second ability seems pointless when the first sinking gives her rank-1 cannons for (presumably) the rest of the game.

Friendly ships within L of this ship get +S to their base move.

This is simply not an ability that should exist… it would be very easy to sandwich the ship between 2 (or more) 10 masters and give them even more speed.  It’s an OP ability that makes OP ships more OP.  I suggest limiting it to one friendly ship, probably only within S, and still increase the cost to a minimum of 15.

@Ben: In my response to Xerecs’s concerns I suggested swapping abilities between the Resuelto and a currently unreleased second ship. I’m going to do part of that, and move a modified version of the Resuelto’s ability to a different ship, but leave the Resuelto with just a cannoneer ability. Would that seriously affect the point cost?

And for the Serenata, I can limit it to one ship, and decrease the speed to S. Would a point cost of 17 be appropriate for her?

Also, I’ll probably refer to Seas of Doom with a spelled out name. The abbreviation was just sort of an inside joke that I accidentally used. ???

Would that seriously affect the point cost?

Without seeing the other ship/abilities I have no idea.

For the Serenata, I was saying that the ability should only affect stuff within S.  The speed of the ship is fine, it’s the ability that makes the original OP.  If you leave everything else the same and do “One friendly ship within S of this ship gets +S to her base move”, I think 15 is OK for a first playtest.

One thing to keep in mind with speed is that it can compound on things that are already really good.  With Griffin/captain/helmsman and a ship like this, you could pretty easily have the Shui Xian consistently going L+S+S+S per turn, let alone with SAC to double that.  Sure it costs a lot, but at some point there should be some kind of cap on how fast these really dangerous vessels can even go, at least in my opinion.  I’ve actually made at least one OP custom with a speed boost that might just get completely nixed for a different ability.  Since speed is the most important ship attribute in this game, it almost cannot be overvalued, and things like the classic helmsman and navigator crew can make powerful customs feel undervalued.

    Mithálvarín
    Faction Affiliation: Jade Rebellion
    Rarity: U
    Type: Crew
    Point Value: 8
Ability: Helmsman. EA. [Extra Action: Once per turn, roll a d6. On a 5-6, this ship may be given an extra action.] Place this crew face up during setup. Reduce the cost of all other crew placed on this ship by 1.
    Link: All French ships

Flavor text: Although he grew up in France, this legendary man was erroneously labeled a traitor for a bizarre set of circumstances involving the Cursed. Since becoming one of the leaders in the Jade Rebellion, his expertise has only grown. He occasionally uses some of his vast cache of diamonds to hire the best crew in the world to help him achieve god-like status.

    Cannons: 3L-3L-3S-3S-3S
Ability: Hostile: Pirate. This ship gets +3 to her d6 rolls against the Pirates. This ship gets +2 to her d6 rolls against the Cursed.
    Link: Alexander Sharpton

Flavor text: Captain Alexander Sharpton commands the Justice with rigid discipline bordering on insanity. Everyone aboard is trained to battle with ocean villains both hidden and powerful. With above average speed for a man-o-war, and long guns concentrated in the bow, the ship is equipped to catch and overtake pirates.

    Alexander Sharpton
    Faction Affiliation: American
    Rarity: R
    Type: Crew
    Point Value: 8
Ability: Hostile: Pirate. Captain. This ship ignores the first hit she takes each turn as long as she has all of her masts. The Fear and Horror abilities have no effect on this ship’s crew.
    Link: Justice

Flavor text: Of all the “pirate haters” in the world, Alexander Sharpton is both the most passionate and the most serious. It is rumored that he said he would never smile until piracy was stamped out completely across the seven seas. The discipline aboard his ship is legendary. With a veteran crew of navy men, he has trained them to be unperturbed by all manner of Pirate and Cursed atrocities.

I really like the Justice and Sharpton.

    Glad to hear that!

the + to die rolls would affect cannons yes? O would it only affect things like EA/SAT, Boarding?

+1 to d6 rolls against a specific faction is simply an upgraded version of the typical faction-hater ability that affects cannon rolls.  It applies to all d6 rolls made specifically AGAINST that faction or factions.  Which generally means combat rolls – it’s a lot easier to say “+1 to her d6 rolls against the Pirates” than “+1 to her cannon, ramming, and boarding rolls against the Pirates.”

It’s meant to be a catch-all and an upgraded version of the “hating” abilities.  It wouldn’t apply to things like EA or SAT, because those are not necessarily being used against Pirates, even if the ship is right next to a Pirate ship.  (because you could game it by pretending to get the +1 to an SAT roll, then just move away instead of doing combat stuff)  There needs to be a direct link between what the ship is doing and the faction of the opponent she’s antagonizing.

There’s a lot of different ways you can word the various bonus abilities, some of which Wizkids certainly played around with.  On opposite ends of the spectrum for example, you could have “+1 to her boarding rolls against Pirate ships” (arguably not worth a full point) vs. “+1 to her d6 rolls against the Pirates” (potentially game-changing if your opponent has an all-Pirate fleet).  The latter would mean cannon/ramming/boarding rolls against Pirate ships, but ALSO those kinds of rolls against Pirate forts, marines, etc, because it doesn’t specify that it has to be a ship.

Hopefully that clears things up, because I have a lot of game pieces in both sets with variations of the bonus abilities.  It all depends on the flavor and how much animosity or incentive there is.  In the case of the Justice, the crew are so against Pirates that they get a massive +3 bonus to ALL rolls against ANY Pirate entities, about as extreme as I could think of.  She’s not quite worth her cost when facing non-Pirate and non-Cursed opponents, but it’s possible that the Justice should be more expensive.  I realize there may be some fringe cases where it’s difficult to determine if the bonus should apply, but I haven’t seen/encountered those yet.

I think that the justice is priced fine at 18, even with he bonus. Since its likely you won’t be chasing pirates o Cursed all the time. Outside of the Bonus, she’s a decent 5 mast for the Americans.

I also think that Sharpton is fine as-is. I would probably NOT use him on his linked ship though. I’d probably put him on the RV constitution! 😀

Good point… there’s a good case to be made that he should be the one with the massive anti-Pirate/Cursed bonuses, but I don’t necessarily want all that on something like the Zhanfu.  Plus he trained the crew to be like him so I suppose it works.  When I make links I usually don’t think about all the other ships a crew could serve on, so I might unintentionally be creating some powerful combos that aren’t “supposed” to happen flavor wise.  XD

Flavor text: A former slave from the African coast, Akin found new life after being saved by Jean Croyonois. His recent travels have included trips to Japan and the increasingly busy (and dangerous) isles of Australia.

    Crew
    6 points
Ability: This ship gets +1 to her boarding rolls. If this ship wins a boarding party, she may capture the crew with the LOWEST point cost instead of eliminating it. A captured crew becomes cargo worth its point cost in gold when unloaded at your home island.

She is believed to have been a vicious street mugger in New York’s “Bloody” Fourth Ward. Upon encountering a lone traveler, she would headbutt like a charging goat a man in the stomach and her male accomplice would hit the victim with a slingshot and then rob him. Sadie, according to popular underworld lore, was engaged in a long-time feud with a tough, six-feet-tall female bouncer Gallus Mag, who finally bit off Sadie’s ear in a bar fight, as Mag was known to do, albeit usually with male trouble-makers.

I actually thought about combos with Sharpton yesterday. Him with OE Mays, Brent Rice a Helmsman, Ralph David , and Wayne Nolan would all fit on the Constitution. An Alternative set-up would be dropping David and Rice for DNT.

Oops!  They are French and I must have just continued the faction from the previous day.

Sharpton is as anti-Pirate as it gets!  I literally cannot make someone who hates Pirates more.  I may still swap abilities around.  Actually just added “if this ship wins a boarding party against a Pirate ship, eliminate all of that ship’s crew.”

    Here comes a big combo….

    Tesoro de los Antiguos
    Faction Affiliation: Spanish
    Rarity: R
    Type: Ship
    Point Value: 24
    Number of Masts: 5
    Cargo Space: 7
    Base Move: L
    Cannons: 5L-4S-4S-4S-5L
Ability: Secret Hold. Hidden Gold. [This ship has 2 extra cargo spaces that may only be assigned treasure.] This ship’s cannons cannot have their range or rank improved.
    Link: El Coleccionista

Flavor text: The Collector always commands his flagship, the Treasure of the Ancients. Personally optimized for ludicrous cargo capacity, the ship’s massive cargo hold has many alleys and secret areas, some which are known only to The Collector. It is rumored that he could be hiding long-lost religious relics down there, or even the infant corpses of illegitimate heirs to the thrones of Europe. Although still flying the Spanish flag, this galleon is known to be all but the property of The Collector himself. His unrivaled passion and zeal have kept even the royal family away from trying to get the ship back in the Atlantic treasure fleet.

Hidden Gold is actually one of Xerecs’ keywords that I like quite a lot. Hoping it goes over more as a compliment than any “theft” of ideas. 🙂

    El Coleccionista
    Faction Affiliation: Spanish
    Rarity: R
    Type: Crew
    Point Value: 10
Ability: Explorer. Unholy Light. Once per turn, if this ship is touching another ship, she can randomly take as much treasure from the other ship as she can carry. If this ship loses a boarding party, this ship does not lose any crew or cargo.
    Link: Tesoro de los Antiguos

Flavor text: Driven beyond the point of no return in his lust to acquire a specific object or objects, The Collector helms his massive galleon and sets sail under his own direction. He speaks so rarely that he is rumored to be a mute. The relics of his desire are unknown – not satisfied with the hundreds of valuable and historic artifacts he has already found, people have stopped guessing what he is searching for. His devotion to his quest has left the world in awe. Most captains simply get out of his way at this point, often letting him and his crew board their vessels and take what they want, which is usually very little. True stories abound of what happens if you refuse to show him what is aboard – the slightest raising of an eyebrow from The Collector summons a deadly hailstorm of musket balls from the Treasure of the Ancients that cuts down the captain in an instant.

Quite a compliment, and rather flattering. I like the combination of abilities on the Treasure, she’s a dedicated large gold hauler. He tertiary ability prevents he from ever becoming a gunship, bu you could put on some boarding oriented crew to make her an unconventional fighter.

It might take a while, given the cost, but it’s highly likely that she’ll see action in either CG4,  THC. I’m looking forward to when she is launched.

    Hello again, all!!
I’m back again with some more Spanish from Seas of Doom!

Three this time because of a linking situation ??

    Relevant Keywords:

    1. Man-O’-War: Once per turn, before you give this ship a shoot action, roll a d6. On a result of an odd number, her cannons become 2-rank for this turn. On a result of an even number, she eliminates two masts with each hit.

    Now, on to the pieces

    9. La Dama de la Medianoche
    Points: 22
    Masts: 5
    Cannons: 4L,3S,3S,3S,4L
    Cargo: 5
    Base Move: L
Ability: Man-O’-War. When this ship is assigned her linked crew and a helmsman, she gets +L to her base move instead of +S.
    Link: Rafael Santiago

Flavor: A new warship, the Lady Midnight is a powerful, yet mysterious galleon, captained by an even more enigmatic man whose personal interests may override direct orders from his superiors.

    10. Rafael Santiago
    Points: 7
Ability: Cannoneer. This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against any ship.
Link: La Dama de la Medianoche; Simon Fray

Flavor: A strange man, Capitan Santiago rarely shows himself, even to his own crew, preferring instead to let a foreign friend of his deliver and execute his orders.

    11. Simon Fray
    Points: 5
Ability: Parley. Crew of any nationality may use their abilities on this ship.
    Link: Rafael Santiago

Flavor: Simon Fray is an Englishman, and a close friend of Rafael Santiago. Fray is far more present on the Lady Midnight than her own captain, and he does not hold any biases as to who he hires for crew.

And that’s the halfway point of the Spanish! With luck I will post again tomorrow morning.
As always, leave you comments, concerns, and questions for me, and I will respond as soon as I can.

I’ve a question or two about your Equipment Copper Sheathing.

Once used, does it still takes up point space on the ship its been applied to? I know it doesn’t take up cargo space, but what about point space?

Could you use more than one on the same ship?

Would using it on a ship with a L+S base move make that ships base move L+L? Or if you used it on a ship with S+S, would it make that ships base move S+L?

I’ve a question or two about your Equipment Copper Sheathing.

Once used, does it still takes up point space on the ship its been applied to? I know it doesn’t take up cargo space, but what about point space?

Yes, because equipment always takes up point space and the ability text doesn’t say otherwise.

Could you use more than one on the same ship?

No: “Only one of the ship’s segments can be increased in this way.”  So even if you can load more than one aboard, only one could ever increase the ship’s base move.

Would using it on a ship with a L+S base move make that ships base move L+L? Or if you used it on a ship with S+S, would it make that ships base move S+L?

    Exactly right.

Let me know if you think it should be more expensive because that’s how I feel.

    Thanks!

I think its fine at 5 points, since it still takes up point space, and 5 points on something that is neither captain, helmsman, or some other essential gunship/gold runner crew is a hefty price to pay.

Ok, everybody: I’m back again with a continuation of the Spanish from Seas of Doom! 😀
    Let’s get right into it!

    Relevant Keywords:

Battleship: A ship with this keyword has two shots per mast and has Extended Range.

+2 Gold Bonus: One of this ship’s treasures is worth +2 gold when unloaded at your home island.

    12. Zuan
    Points: 14
    Masts: 2
    Cannons: 3S,3S
    Cargo: 2
    Base Move: S+S
    Ability: Battleship.

Flavor: When Luis Zuan died, it was not in a Spanish prison like his Uncles, but rather in a blaze of glory, defending a crucial fort from a pirate attack. Almirante García-Fernández made sure his legacy would be known with the christening of this vessel.

    13. Orgullo de Barcelona
    Points: 13
    Masts: 3 (jib)
    Cannons: 2S,3L,2S
    Cargo: 4
    Base Move: L
    Ability: +2 Gold Bonus

Flavor: The Pride of Barcelona is, as her name suggests, a merchant ship, hailing from the port city of Barcelona. And, as is in her name, she is one of the best vessels to come from that city.

That does it for today, but hopefully I’ll be able to post more tomorrow. With luck we’ll be through the Spanish soon.
As always, leave me your comments, ideas, questions, and concerns, and I’ll get back to you probably by midnight ?

    Until next post,

Ability: Mercenary. Longship. If this ship has a Captain crew, she gets +S to her base move. This ship gets +1 to her equipment and specialist rolls.

Flavor text: Hyper-crazed mercenaries and a few former Vikings crew this oddity. Although regarded as completely psychotic, they have gotten rich based sheerly on their ability to strike a target with incredible speed and force.
