a standard 40 point game, but ships are damaged permanently and realistically (shot by actual cannons when they are hit in game)
I want to do something like that someday, but you’d have to have bigger ships to make it work unless we can utilize technology to really miniaturize the shots and damage to a tiny scale.

I’ve never expanded it beyond being an upgrade to the basic Catan game, but you could in theory make a megagame out of it, with your Catan cities producing ships which you then use to play Pirates CSG.
I assume you saw Woelf‘s version on the page? His alternate ruleset is one I’ve wanted to try for a while, but I want to learn how to play Catan first.

Any other variants on how to play the game that people have done?
That’s why this thread and the associated page linked above exists – I may still sticky it so it’s more visible. I merged your topic into this one so there won’t be tons of different threads about the same topic over time.
The Game Ideas page has enough content to keep you busy f…[Read more]

I hadn’t heard about the MT crisis until like last week. It’s sad to hear :/ There’s definitely plenty of Pirates fans out there but as you said the MT scare seems to have scattered people.
Yeah, I’ve directed people from there to here with a sticky thread at MT along with updates on just about all the Pirates sites I know of, but between the u…[Read more]

Ben replied to the topic A game in every pack! in the forum Pirates CSG 7 years, 6 months ago
Has anyone actually played a game with the contents of a single pack?
I can’t remember exactly how my first “games” went down back in 2005, but it’s possible that I played out of just one pack because that’s what the Start Here rules suggest. However, my first purchase was 2 packs of SM, so it’s likely I learned with both of them.
I agree that…[Read more]

I played the second 60 point game between these fleets (previous BR). The Triton explored an island early, only to have one of her masts shot away by the Algiers. The Tunis also explored an island, but her […]

France always seemed like the best all-around nation to me and in any strategy game like this I like to go for versatility.
The Pirates are the best, but you can make a solid case for the French in 2nd place. I like their versatility as well, in addition to their underrated named crew selection (for example: 2 sac captains; England and Spain c…[Read more]

How do you feel about the number of packs floating around? Mass produced sets like OE are still easy to find, but obviously the supply of even those is not infinite.
It feels like a very long and very slow decline into reasonable pack scarcity. With people still getting into the game or coming back to it, it seems that packs are still being…[Read more]

not really sure if they should be called “pocket models”. Sounds like a good way to break a mast!
Indeed! I like that idea more for action figures or something that is all one piece, that doesn’t get disassembled. The cards would fit nicely in a pocket, but I wouldn’t want to risk ships in there….

Ben replied to the topic Is there a better construction material than styrene to make the ships with? in the forum Pirates CSG 7 years, 6 months ago
I think they are pretty sturdy for what they are. Plus this is probably the most economical option.
Agreed. In the Podcast with James Ernest, he talked about how expensive it was to make the ships, which corroborates what people reported in the past with the “styrene format being cost-prohibitive to produce”.

@Jack: Yay for the French! 🙂 They are really good. It seems like a lot of people in the current Pirates CSG community have some disdain for the French, so even though the English are my favorite I find myself sticking up for the underrated French more than I should have to.
The Miniature Reviews section at MT has been somewhat dormant for so…[Read more]

-Does anyone know of materials that would be better for construction? (fragility listed as one of most popular least favorite aspects in main survey)
Needless to say, alternatives like cardboard/cardstock (too flimsy) and wood (too rigid) are out. I think plastic is the best choice and I have no problem with the “fragility” of the ships, but if…[Read more]
