After republishing this BR, I remember how obsessed I’ve occasionally been with trying to create shipwrecks during gameplay (not custom premade shipwrecks that are present at the start of play).  I think they look incredibly fantastic, and really add to the old-school naval piracy and high seas thematic feel.  However, in my experience they’re exceedingly rare, and almost need to be forced in order to happen.

I’m not saying reefs should be even more devastating to large ships, but I guess I just wouldn’t mind more in-game opportunities to explore and document shipwrecks.  Maybe it’s just me though.  🙂

I agree, love the concept and look of the wrecks. Two thoughts I had would be if the ship was crewed when it was sunk, the owner can do a sort of “saving throw” if they roll highed than the number of masts the ship had when it started it becomes a wreck. That or if a ship sinks within an L or maybe 2S from an island or terrain it is in shallow water and becomes a wreck. Could make things interesting by saying before you can explore a hostile wreck you have to kill the crew, marines and musketeers could still shoot from their wrecks and even unique treasure like “Deck Cannon” can still be used.

Neat.  Though I think it should have to be within S of an island or reef for that to happen.

I definitely like that in general.  I think Musketeers would be a lot more interesting if they were treated similar to Marines.  I’ve also had various thoughts about crew on a derelict fighting back in various ways against capture… though some of the specifics escape me right now.
