Relaunch idea – regular booster packs with random factions in them, but every ship/crew in the pack is of the same faction. (including generic crew 4 to a card)

I think this would help with starting fleets and with getting crew that match the nationality of the ships you have.  Not sure if collation/stuffing the packs would be more expensive (or less) this way.

Would you like this?  Or would you prefer everything random, including different factions in the same pack?

Hmmmm. This sounds cool and a neat idea, but thee HAS to be an even distribution of factions to seller locations. I mean, a 36 pack box should contain six packs for every faction, to make it evenly distributed, more or less. I’m just worried that things could trend toward SCS levels of rarity and scarcity very quickly, with a certain faction getting pieces and all that, but not being distributed as much as the other factions in the set.

Long and short, I’m totally behind this idea, especially the generic crew, I just have some concerns over how it would shake out.

At the very least, it would be nice if whatever crew were included in a pack were guaranteed to match the ships they came with, especially named crew. Generic crew could be changed to true generics without nationality requirements so they’d be a non-issue.

Single nation packs would kill the “game in every pack” marketing claim, but when was the last time *anyone* actually played the game against someone else using only the contents of a single pack?

(I’d rather the game have a “starter set” or two with pre-determined contents that included everything needed to play a simple two-player game, like most of the other WK games did. The individual packs could then be slimmed down to just the cards themselves, with at most an extra island, so you don’t end up with large piles of garbage whenever you open a dozen packs at a time.)

Good point; it might be tricky to ensure that things would be fair.

I’ll have to do that soon then.  XD   Just kidding, I have way too many unopened packs to justify bothering.  😀

I agree about the starter packs.  I like the game in every pack feature but it’s not quite optimal.

Tiffany O’Brien discussed distribution in the podcast. She mentioned working on different ways to distribute the packs from tins to boxes and how the color of the packs were more important than the names at times. Had Wizkids continued making the game I imagine variations on the packs would have been a logical step. I don’t play magic but it is to my understanding that you select the type of packs you buy based upon what you want/need for the deck you are building. So this idea is implemented successfully with other games.

So you could keep the starter packs as the “game in every pack” variant where islands, crew, and random ships are all included but then other packs that are cheaper to produce and do not contain everything could be sold separately. Those could be the single nation, or crew only… ect options available.

The logistical and distribution nightmare that may cause would probably require a larger company than what O’Brien seemed to indicate worked on pirates.

I’ll give a +1 bonus to this idea.  XD

Makes a lot of sense.  A starter pack for each set with 5-10 ships, then ship/crew/etc packs for the real “expansion” part.
