New to the forum here at Pirates with Ben? Introduce yourself with some information! Feel free to share:
Origin of username
When/how/why you got into Pirates
Percentage of Player vs. Collector that you would classify yourself as
Your favorite thing about Pirates CSG (can also be your favorite ship/game piece)
Aliases you use at other Pirates CSG sitesI’ll start:
My first proper youtube video explains me origin story. I be called A7XfanBen, but you can call me Ben for simplicity if ya want.
I’m generally about 95% player and 5% collector, but VASSAL has made me about 99% player since I can save me booty for grub and rum! 😛 Besides, I got more’n 800 ships in me fleet anyway, so I be doin’ alright on the seas.I love that Pirates CSG is a game about freedom – free to sail wherever you want, use whatever ships and crew in your fleet that you want, implement any strategy that you want, and even play for free whenever you want with the VASSAL module if you don’t have any ships.
November 12, 2018 at 5:02 PM #1777XerecsModeratorAvast ye scoundrel, Xerecs is here! In other places I be a mighty Lord Sentinel, but here I’s me humble self. I be named after a tragic character in a fantastic epic. Perhaps one day the story will be told…….
I be a-playing this game more than I be collecting it, though I have me eyes ever on the horizon. Lookin for me missin booty an treasure.
Me favorite thing aboot this game be the customization ye can achieve. Ye can dash the rules an make yer own, or ye can get VERY complicated wit yer games. If ye fancy yeself a creative sort ye can even maker yer own ships to sail on the seas in pursuit of fine and wondrous treasure!
Alas, I was once part of another place for pirates, but I was banned from there. Now I hear it’s a goin belly up, so perhaps me being forced out weren’t such a bad ting. While I were there I was known by me same name ‘ere, and iffen you look closely, ye can still see where I left me mark…..
I be known by other names in other places, there’s the alter version of meself that can be found on the book of faces. ‘Owever me name as given here is what I be known as amongst the discord, and in the place for geeks of board-games.
November 14, 2018 at 10:19 PM #1816CatharactaParticipantAhoy there,
I used to be into the game quite a bit back while I was in college (we had a group that would meet once a week to play in the dorms), but haven’t done much other than a couple of trades since the production stopped. I always kept up my Miniature Trading account, though, and seeing the post about its demise, was filled with nostalgia for the game, and decided to sign up here!
I haven’t played in years (the collection is stored away in the closet), but I might get them out when I have the time. I was thrilled to learn about VASSAL, and I will definitely be checking that out when I have a spare moment.
My time is limited at the moment – in real life I am a scientist who studies seabirds (sailing the actual ocean), which gave me my username. “Catharacta” is an old genus name for the larger skuas: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skua, quite fearsome birds.
I was always more player than collector, but I’ve got some collector genes in me 😉
I loved the premise of the game, and how adaptable the strategies were. I’m just glad there are still people out there that keep it alive!
November 14, 2018 at 10:59 PM #1818TorpereParticipantAhoy there!
I am a long time member of Minature Trading; I originally joined in 2005 but didn’t log in for 30 days because I got deployed to Iraq. So I had to remake my account and start over. (I am robert152 there). I only wrote one review over there, The Star of Siam.
My favorite thing about Pirates CSG was, well, the SHIPS! I have always been fascinated with Pirates and their ships, their lives, and their culture. So when I saw this game at a local gaming store I bought a whole booster box and pulled an HMS Titan on my first pack! From then on I was hooked and bought packs as often as I could get them, then moved on to buying ships on ebay to round out my collection. But after getting married and living life I sold off most of my collection but still have my favorite ships tucked away in a few plastic containers.
All that to say, I was more of a collector than a player. I played a little in High School because I had friends who collected and played too. Perhaps I’ll have to give VASSAL a go!
Thank you Ben for creating this wonderful site and keeping the community alive!

November 15, 2018 at 9:51 AM #1825BenKeymaster@All: Thank you so much for signing up!
Catharacta, that is quite the interesting story. Awesome that you are a true seafarer as well! One of my random long term goals with Pirates is to play a game aboard a sailing ship while sailing around. 🙂 XD
Torpere, great story – I wasn’t aware of all that. Impressive origin story, and thank you for the kind words.
Who will be the next to clamber aboard the ship? XD
November 15, 2018 at 12:19 PM #1837Matt LovellParticipantFigured I’d start with this since introducing myself was about my third post over at MT since I kept putting it off.
So how I got into Pirates. I got into CCG’s in general with Star Trek in 1994 and played various games through 2005. Sometime in late 2005 or early 2006 my then girlfriend picked up a random pack, pretty sure Crimson Coast and we played it eventually and liked it. A lot. We got married later in 2006 and actually spent quite a bit of $$ on our honeymoon buying whatever packs or boxes (so much SCS and DJC) we could find throughout places we went (civil war battlefields in Alabama and Mississippi, definitely not a typical honeymoon).
Definitely started more player with over time job changes and moving (and currently renovating my house slowly) turning me more into a collector. Getting back more into playing now and got the kids into a game the other weekend. Lets go 25% player right now but always have been a completest, even when I’d play constantly. VASSAL is on my to-do list. eventually.
Username has pretty much has been some version of Karakas529 everywhere since mid-nineties. Origin of it… a variation of a daytime soap opera characters last name and my scout troop growing up.
Ben – Not quite your long term goal of playing on a sailing ship but I have played games on an aircraft carrier, pier-side though, not underway.

Nice! Welcome aboard the ship.
Ben – Not quite your long term goal of playing on a sailing ship but I have played games on an aircraft carrier, pier-side though, not underway.
Very cool, I’d love to see an aircraft carrier someday. Was it Pirates you were playing while aboard, or a different game?
November 15, 2018 at 1:01 PM #1841Matt LovellParticipantYes, Pirates got played on occasion. Not often but it happened. Underway most CCG type games would be Magic almost exclusively.
November 15, 2018 at 2:14 PM #1847ernie pradoModeratorI started playing in 2007, my best friend worked at the game store and I would go there on my days off and play Warhammer, I noticed all the kids were playing this game with ships and I started watching them play.
A couple of the kids asked if I wanted to learn to play and then proceeded to teach me and I was hooked. It was quite a sight since I was already 44 at the time and I was being schooled by 13 year olds.
The playing of Pirates at the game store was a short run once the next new hot game out, I did have some adult friends that played but games were far a few between.
I have given away a lot of cards trying to get people into the game over the years with little luck, must of been the fact they were Ocean’s Edge, this is pretty much when I shifted into just a hardcore collector.
After all these years my wife showed some interest in my “Little Boats” and she is becoming a great Captain in her own right, We currently have a long running game on the table right now.
I am also active on the FB group page.

I toured one in 2010, went to see the Midway in San Diego. Was quite interesting, the ceilings and doorways were all really low, and since I’m about 6 foot even I had to duck everywhere I went. 😀

Because OE is a bad set? I’ve found that despite giving stuff away, people need my initiation to play, period. If I don’t keep things up they’re not going to play on their own or teach anyone else, which is part of the reason I don’t give as much away anymore. Even the most “gamer” type person I’ve taught (who I think liked the game more than anyone else I’ve taught) gave their ships back to me when they left college and we wouldn’t be able to play anymore.
November 16, 2018 at 11:04 PM #1892Andrew MullenParticipantAhoy there! I be pirateaj14, sailing over from the sinking ship that is Miniature Trading. Even though that site is going down, the work Ben has done here is really exciting, especially since it’s to keep the Pirates community alive for longer.
My username was something I made up. Nothing special, but something I could remember easily and got my point across.
I got a Pirates of the Revolution pack back in 2011, after the game was discontinued. I bought some other ships, but they stayed in a box until 2017, when I pulled them out again, studied the rules, and started playing the game. The concept of the game is nice and the ships are fantastic.
I’m almost completely a player, but i have almost 2 of every ship type in the game. 99% player, 1% collector.
I love the history and the aesthetics of the ships, crew, and other pieces in this game. It gives it a nostalgic feel and you can really put some good fleets together. My favorite ship is the Enterprise from the ole US of A.
I go by pirateaj14 on other sites (pretty much only miniature trading and board game geek).
Looking forward to sharing ideas and thoughts here on the forum!

November 17, 2018 at 12:54 AM #1893Jean LafitteParticipantHowdy!
As you can see my name here shows up as Jean Lafitte which is the inspiration for my usual online username lafittejean which is of course derived from the famed pirate Jean Lafitte who stars in the Revolution set but with whom I became familiar with studying history.
I got into Pirates CSG maybe 8 years ago or so, my mother bought me a Crimson Coast Pack and after a couple tins and I was hooked.
Right now I’m pretty much a pure collector with how busy I am with work much less actually getting around to playing games with people but I host ambitions to maybe actually play the game if I can find someone.
Pirates fascinates me with the tactile feel of the ships combined with an interesting approach tabletop wargaming that seems to be nonexistant beyond the product lines directly related to it.
On MT I am known as lafittejean and I’m also part of the FB group.November 26, 2018 at 5:00 PM #2177Brettb45ParticipantHey Everyone,
My username is just my first name and last initial so nothing special. I started playing pirates back in the fall of 2005 after a college buddy saw them in our local gaming store and wanted to try them out. Once I got some of my own I was hooked and played all the time. I still get together once a year for an entire weekend with six or seven of my old college buddy’s and play nine or ten games.
I’m pretty much 100% player. I’ve only focused on equally building up four nations (American, English, Pirate, & Spanish) so that I can play with others who don’t have their own pieces. Focusing on these four has also allowed me to minimize how much I have to spend and to learn those four nations really well too. My favorite thing about Pirates CSG is the strategy involved and how many different strategies you can come up with to win. MT is the main site I visit for this game.
November 26, 2018 at 10:10 PM #2178BenKeymaster@Pirateaj14, Jean Lafitte, Brettb45: Welcome! Very happy to have you aboard my new ship here. XD I look forward to many intriguing discussions over the years and continuing the Pirates tradition.

December 11, 2018 at 10:23 PM #2434El TiburónParticipantGreetings!
I’m really glad that this boat is sailing well and it looks like a really awesome crew here. Thank you Ben for your recent invite through eBay. I’ve been playing since it was first introduced and have done my best to get others hooked. I’m finally retired from military service so hopefully I’ll get some time to dust off the ol’ collection and start playing again.
I have a moderate size collection, maybe 300 ships but my favorite is still the Spanish… and being El Acorazado from the first series to boot. I’ve managed to pull off a few tricks with that boat but lost more skirmishes than I care to mention. It’s a fantastic game and conceptually sound with a ton of play space for customized missions and scenarios. I was blessed to host a 14-man / 4-day massive event back in ’06 – everyone had a ton of fun. Which of course is the point.
Sorry, got a bit chatty there. Thanks everyone and looking forward to being a part of the team here.
December 12, 2018 at 3:56 PM #2436BenKeymasterWelcome aboard the ship! Glad to know that at least one of my little eBay notes paid off. (pun intended? hmm XD)
Ship>boat
🙂 Now that’s more like it. 😀

That does sound epic. Any more details you remember? If so (including any pictures), feel free to talk about it more in the Battle Reports thread.
Someone in a related Facebook group mentioned trying to get an event going at Gencon 2019.
Be as chatty as you want!! This game and forum need it! 🙂
December 16, 2018 at 2:42 AM #2461KyleParticipantHello fellow buccaneers!
I’ve been known as skyvoc since I was 10 years old, some odd 17 years ago, combining the tough skytrooper of unreal and the renegade havoc from Command and conquer. I got into pirates about 14 years ago when my uncle and cousins came to visit and brought their collection to play. Altrady a big fan of the freedom of magic the gathering and other strategy games, I was hooked. Spent some summer earnings haulin hay and bought a bunch of cheap packs, never really getting to play again. Fast forward to today, finally dug out my collection organized everything, and played a game with the wife. After she enjoyed it I have started picking up foam, cardboard, and paint from work to begin making 3d terrain and new features to implement. I love pirates because its strategic enough to for me to enjoy, but easy enough to teach new players a fun tabletop game. I hope to bring some interesting photos and hopefully more people into the forum, as once I get into my hobbies I am very passionate about them. I’d say I’m 99% player, and the 1% collector wants to collect them all so I can play with them!

I can certainly agree and vibe with all of that! 😀 Welcome aboard!
I’ve also been able to source island-making materials from work, and now I’ve accumulated far more than I’m ever likely to use. XD I look forward to seeing your creations/games/etc.

I revisit this game off and on every year or so. And I don’t have the massive shipyard of pieces many of ye no doubt have, but I’ve kept every one I ever got. Looking to brush up and improve me notes, so I look forward to your valuable insight and experience!
Now off to read some posts!
ahoy!

December 25, 2018 at 8:29 PM #2548Nikolaos HainariksParticipantHello all,
I am a very new to this game in a serious manner. I bought the game when it first came out and never really played it or collected seriously since I was pretty young. I have lost pretty much everything from that time except a one-masted Batavian Bat (others broke).
I have gotten interested in the game and have spent more money than I’d like to admit building a collection that would’ve made the younger me proud. I also plan on introducing this game to some friends in hope to play it. I am still very raw and looking to learn.
I’d say that I want to be mostly a player, but my tendency to over-collect is creeping up on me as my collection grows. This game interests me cause of its uniqueness and my fascination with the age of sail and military history in general.
My username comes from that of the political philosopher John Locke and ESP for España. He’s a philosopher I admire and Spain is the country I have a deep connection with and will be living in within a matter of months. You guys can call me whatever you prefer, LockeESP, Nikolaos Hainariks, Niko, NH! I look forward to becoming more engulfed in this game and the community!

I’m going to start this off by saying hi I’m TheTitaniumNerfer the reason I made this my username is because I’m a blacksmith and I like to work with Titanium and I also do serious nerf modifications on the side so I put those two words together and you have TheTitaniumNerfer that is the origin of my username .
The reason I’m into this game so much is when I was really young I was always amazed by pirates I used to watch Pirates of the Caribbean almost every day it’s also part of the reason I like to blacksmith but that is the reason I like this game so much it’s like the movie but an awsome tiny board game.
Right now I’m 50/50 on player and collector.
January 12, 2019 at 9:53 AM #2662JeremiahParticipantHello everyone,
Upon returning from a hiatus of sorts from pirates I found myself on an abandoned ship (miniature trading) but luckily most people seemed to have moved here so the community is not dead as I feared. I changed my username from MT to one that I use far more often. Nothing particularly special about it just a family thing.
Anyway glad to coming back to the forums and the game in general. Good work Ben and everyone involved with the data saving and transfer process. I left just about when I heard the news that MT was going down due to work/school.

Many of you have traded with me, and many of you may have purchased with me at Ebay. I don’t know if there are any provisions being made for trades or not. I still have lots of available cards.let me know if we can help each other out.

January 19, 2019 at 7:07 PM #2758BenKeymasterAhoy Trox, thanks for joining the ship here at Pirates with Ben!
I don’t know if there are any provisions being made for trades or not.
That is a large project that I will not be able to complete anytime soon. For now we’ll have to rely on private messages.
February 6, 2019 at 8:00 AM #3065J.ParticipantUsername origin: First initial of my first name. I kept at least 1 of each Pirates of the Spanish Main gamepiece that I thought was strong and bought. All replaced in their cards and in cardboard boxes. I stopped playing after the sea monsters were released because finding players to play was getting harder.
When: I got into POTSM within 1 year (maybe 6 or 8 months) after Wizkids started selling the product. How: My older sister’s friend introduced her and I to it because they were and are into games. Why: No gameboard is needed and I like how miniatures give me a sense of being high in the sky. The trait that they are in a game add additional fun for me with the miniatures.I’m 96% player and 4% collector.
My favorite thing about the Pirates CSG is a board is unnecessary.
I Googled info on POTSM in November or December of 2018, found your site and it’s the only Pirates CSG site that I knew of before reading some of this topic’s 2nd and 3rd entries today. So I don’t have aliases at other Pirates CSG sites.
February 6, 2019 at 3:47 PM #3067Ve1mParticipantHello all!
I was very happy to hear about this site launching, it just took me a while to finally join. I used to be on MT years ago under the same name, and greatly enjoyed it.
My username, which I use for a lot of online accounts, comes from the “Helmsman”. A word I thought sounded very cool when I was younger. So I added a “V” beforehand and its been a part of everything online for me since then.
I got into pirates when I saw the booster packs at Walmart in 2005 I believe and got one on a whim. It was all history after that as I bought packs as often as I could with money from my paper route and asked for them for every holiday and birthday.
I am much more of a collector than a player, but I obviously love playing, but the collection aspect has kept me interested for 14 years and counting.
My favorite expansion is easily Mysterious Islands, as I loved Captain Nemo and the 1961 movie Mysterious Island as a kid. The subs are my favorite game pieces. Hephaestus, the Nautilus, and USS Mercury being some of my favorites. On a side note, I don’t have the Mercury and am extremely interested in acquiring 1 or 2 if anyone has any leads.
I’ve been really enjoying the podcast and am hoping to get back into playing regularly and collecting. I also do some miniature painting and terrain making and want to full-fill my 14 year dream of making an epic custom game board for pirates in 2019.
Anyway, I look forward to interacting with you all on here, and keeping the love for this game alive!
