What kind of player are you?
The Gladiator: Treats standard games like a deathmatch. Tries to sink everything.
The Newbie: Barely uses any crew. Doesn’t put helmsmen on ships with S speed.
The Fool: Normally uses a ton of house rules and acts confused when they try to play with other people.
The Scumbag: Only uses Le Bonaparte, Mermaids, Banshee’s Cry, Lord Mycron and other OP stuff. Has never made a fleet without a Limit crew. Has never made a Barbary Corsair fleet without the Tiger’s Eye or a Jade Rebellion fleet without the Virtuous Wind. Doesn’t see anything wrong with using UPS against brand new players.
The Power Gamer: Not a scumbag, but always brings high-level game pieces even in the most casual setting. Doesn’t seem to understand that there are less competitive fleet tiers that other people sometimes want to try out.
The Tourney Gamer: Only plays 1v1 standard. Very competitive, knows the game inside and out and “exploits” all the rules to win as often as possible.
The Sophisticated: Makes fleets and theories involving silver coins, Parley, obscure combos and reducer crew but rarely even plays the game.
The Child: Uses the same “favorite” gunship every single game as a beatstick and whines when they lose.
The Filthy Landlubber: Eats finger foods during the game. Then they capture your LE ship and still haven’t washed their hands….
The Nice Guy: Often points out different avenues an opponent can take, opening their mind up to great moves they otherwise wouldn’t see that could result in the nice guy losing the game. Great at teaching new players.
The Predictable: Uses the same fleet (or small variations of it) in every game. Despite having a decent collection they refuse to branch out and use anything other than their “favorite” 2-5 ships.
The Unpredictable: Comes at you with different fleets in every game.
The Trickster: Relishes the opportunity to unveil cancellers/Eternal crew/etc at the opportune moment.
The Hoarder: Tries to capture as many ships as possible in addition to getting gold.
The Collector: Doesn’t play, or doesn’t use their highly effective rare ships because they are “too expensive to punch”.
The Cheater: At every opportunity, takes advantage of other players not knowing the rules well enough. Willing to make up selfishly beneficial “house rules” on the spot as if they are official rules.
The Weirdo: Constantly uses The Cursed/Vikings/Mercenaries, doesn’t care about winning, often uses strange named crew and combos just for the heck of it.
The Grinch: Tries to wreck everyone’s holiday experience by using the Sleigh and Whitebeard on Christmas Eve. Then acts like it was a legit win afterwards.
The Uncaring: Often rolls a bunch of dice at once during shoot actions, then realizes afterwards that they should have left a ship derelict instead of sinking it. Forgets to reveal key face down crew at the right time. Accidentally loads face up UT’s face down and acts like it’s no big deal when it affects the outcome of the game.
The Elitist: Shows their “superiority” by constantly playing expensive and effective things like the Zeus, Spanish Morning Star, LE Griffin, etc.
The Kingmaker – Tries to get their favorite to win if they can’t.

Time to poke a little fun!  😀 XD

Which ones are you now?  Which were you in the past?

As mentioned elsewhere I believe I’m currently a mesh of power-gamer, sophisticated, predictable and unpredictable. I like to use a lot of the best things (like Mycron et.all) since that results in winning the game, which I do enjoy. That I use those pieces a lot trends me into predictable, especially if I’m playing against my brothers. They’ve gotten tired of seeing a decked out Acorazado, Constitution or HMS Grand Temple being thrown at them when we play large pointed games. This leads me to think of new ways to use ships and crew, leading to the sophisticated and unpredictable. I think the closest I got to a sophisticated was when I made the gold race 3 fleet on MT, which utilized CJS, silver and a silver explorer along with other gold bonus crew.

I’ve only been a tourney gamer for the VASSAL tournaments, and wouldn’t mind a return to one of those. Maybe.

There have been a few times I was trickster, but it doesn’t happen often. I think the most memorable was when I hid Gus Schultz on the Constitution in a game against my brothers.

It’d probably be fun to try as the weirdo for a few games, since the Cursed are my favorite flavor faction. 😀

A little bit of all of these mixed together.   Certain factions, items, and strategies did get used more than others, but I always made it a point to try at least something new every game (or at least different from the past few games).   Not necessarily obscure stuff for the sake of obscure stuff, but always more than just pure speed and firepower, and I’d often purposely avoid using the best of the best ships.

I have no idea what my win/loss record was, but I don’t expect that it was much above 50/50 because so many of those plays were with people new to the game or at least less experienced, and I was always helping them out when needed.

I do this a little bit now, but less so in the past, especially against my brothers. I haven’t had opportunity to teach many new players.

I’m probably a mix of the Gladiator, the Fool, and the Unpredictable. I mostly play solo campaigns these days, with a fair number of house rules. And I’m currently trying to use every ship I own at some point in the relatively near future, so I use different fleets almost every time I play right now. Other than trying to use Le Superbe in every French fleet (what can I say, it’s my favorite ship)

When I was a kid I was a “Child” Lol (go to gunship was the SM Harbinger).

Nowadays I consider myself an “Elitist Trickster Gladiator” with a bit of “Sophisticated” which gives way to “unpredictable”.

How about “The Teacher – Someone who spends their time teaching new players and mostly plays very basic games with less experienced players.”

That’s me these days. I don’t play solo, and there are no experienced players near me so I try to teach new people the game at my LGS.

Great idea!  I’ll add it to the first post.  I definitely had a run with that, mostly in 2015-2016 teaching a bunch of family members and friends in college.
