Maybe it was a convenience thing? I like how the original explorers from Spanish Main looked. Then they started making them look like musketeers, which just makes searching for generic crew more difficult. Also funky how some helmsmen look like cannoneers or some other generic crew type.
It’s somewhat trivial, but I also like how my Spanish Main generic crew have their titles in all caps. It makes them easier to see and read.

It was nice how most of the minor nation got unique artwork for their generic crew, and then it was especially neat in the later sets how the rest of the nations got their own artwork, even though it did make sorting quickly a little more difficult. The best were the ones that still kinda looked like the originals while still being nation-specific.

I don’t think it was worth it to go to faction-specific in the later sets, as I have far more generic crew from the earlier sets (that were better and therefore more likely to be purchased anyway).
Identical crew also make it easier to justify using generic crew on ships of any nationality, which is a very good house rule for newer players and/or those with small collections.
No surprises from me I suppose; I still have some nostalgia for the original artwork and EXPLORER in the Windlass font. 🙂 Whenever I make fleets I almost always try to use the oldest generic crew possible, especially using all-caps SM crew on ships from the early days of SM/CC/RV. 04-05 was the golden age for releases; I’m so glad I got into the game early enough to see it briefly.

I have a bunch like that too, so it wasn’t a misprint. They definitely messed up the generic crew artwork.
