Just as the title says. You could choose something like 3 masted square rigged ships, but I have a feeling it’s more likely to be something that has a ship-type keyword, such 2 masted submarines or Sea Dragons/etc.
My vote would be flotillas, though krakens might be rising to challenge that.

I’ll stand by the old capture-captains like Aruj Barbarossa, and especially Bonny Peel with the Pirate price discount.
They’re expensive to use, require the right ship and setup, and they force you to get up close and personal with the enemy, but when they hit, it’s a game-changer. Not only can they give you buckets of gold, but they also strip away some of your opponent’s best crew, who thought they were protected behind a meat shield of oarsmen and other cheap fodder. Even the unkillables aren’t safe.

I think most players are well aware of how powerful flotillas can be, especially in deathmatch. You need the right ship to drag one around, but there are numerous good options in every nation that has them.
Krakens are a good call. They have the unfortunate combination of being hard to get and even harder to use, plus they require an expensive support crew (DJ) to really get the most out of them. Even then, they tend to be way too specialized; you’re spending an awful lot of points just to be able to tie up just one opposing ship for a turn or two, but when you do catch a ship that can’t deal with them, they’re in for a rough time.

I’ve certainly vouched for them a lot over the years, but I’ve almost never come across someone else using one. Such great bang for the buck, and recently I realized they can be good for whirlpool raids because they can be given a shoot action after emerging from a whirlpool (without the towing ship needing another action).

I’m not sure if they’re underrated, but I’ve been growing more attached to Galleys recently. Having a pseudo-Oarsman on them is pretty nice as it often forces your opponent to expend extra time to finishing off a mastless Galley. In some cases it’s still better to just have the Oarsman, but it’s nice as a built-in feature.
Sometimes getting line of sight with their mast arrangement can be a little difficult, but I find that the stern turn often helps with this and is also generally quite useful. Not being able to take out masts when ramming is a bit of a downside though.

Agreed. On a similar note, it always surprises me when people underrate and write off the Barbary Corsairs as a faction because they can’t fight that well. The goal of the game is to get the most gold, and they have plenty of cheap, fast and capacious galleys with which to do that. 🙂
