Hey guys, I just recently landed the excellent Soleil Royal and I was very excited to use it, until I began to get a little buyer’s remorse upon looking at the Superbe.
She has better guns, faster speed, and only for 2 more points. It would throw a wrench in my carefully constructed French fleets and I’d need to reconstruct them, but am I wrong in thinking its a superior flagship? I intend on using Capitaine Arathiel and sac fodder on either, but I’d like some guidance on what would be best. I also don’t want to just get the Superbe and leave the Soleil forgotten. I’d like to know what each is good at, kind of like positives for both and things they can do that the other can’t.
March 16, 2019 at 6:48 PM #3792BenKeymaster3 more points. The Superbe is a better ship, but not necessarily when you factor in point costs. I did rank the Soleil Royal as the best French gunship. Looking at that, Superbe should probably be #3.
Which one is better just depends on the points you have available. If you can include Superbe without cutting too many corners, the speed is likely to be worth it. However, the Soleil has a better ability and the Superbe can’t do much against ships with L-immunity like the Jarvis. Soleil is a better budget gunship and one of the best cheap 5 masters, while the Superbe has better range between the speed and all L-range guns. Both are great so you can’t really go wrong here.

However, there are few more satisfying things than pulling up to a ship like El Acorazado with La Magnifique and getting off a broadsides!
March 16, 2019 at 9:48 PM #3803MechavelliParticipantHmm. I have a question about the rules. Do I get to choose the crew LSR kills? If not, what’s stopping my opponent from killing off a less useful crew instead of, say, his captain?
Follow up question, would killing their captain be worth it? Why not just go with the Superbe’s better killing power and destroy the ship outright?
Sorry if these are dumb questions, I just haven’t played with crew killers yet so I’m unsure of how useful they are.
March 16, 2019 at 10:12 PM #3804JackParticipantThe loser chooses in almost every scenario. So if he’s got a bunch of crew he can eliminate his oarsman, cannoneer, helmsman, etc. before you get to the best one.
But it’s not once per turn either and in a standard game you don’t tend to see too many crew on a ship.
March 16, 2019 at 10:20 PM #3805MechavelliParticipantHmm no, the effect is indeed once per turn. I would definitely consider this better than the Superbe if it triggered on every hit like the Belle Etoile since it would severely cripple a ship by killing all her crew at once
March 16, 2019 at 10:26 PM #3806JackParticipantOh then I’m not sure which I’d rather. Maybe LSR just because of points.
My favorite French flagship will always be La Magnifique, though there’s plenty of competition.
March 17, 2019 at 8:29 AM #3809BenKeymasterLoser chooses for crew elimination, else it would be too easy to just pick off an opponent’s Davy Jones very early in the game/etc. The Superbe barely has better killing power, you’re mostly paying the extra points for the valuable speed increase.
I love the Magnifique as well, she was my first 5 master! The French got a lot of good and beautiful 5 masters, which is part of the reason I enjoy playing them as a faction. (favorite ship type and they just look awesome, though almost too pretty for battle sometimes XD)
