Now that the Rules survey has some results (43 responses as of this post), I think it would be a good idea to discuss some various options in detail.

During your most fun games of Pirates, what was the general setup/build total of those games? (Can include island/terrain setup, gold, number of players, if a scenario was used, etc.)

Generally scenarios based on the characters/lore of the game. Hermione Gold vs Eileen O’Brien, Pierre Arronax vs Nemo, etc.

-Do you think there should have been more official scenarios?

    (perhaps a “versus” series)

I haven’t done that much before, but it is a logical way of introducing specific themes to the game.  If they were free and available online, I think people could go crazy making scenarios and then having Wizkids or whoever owned the game pick one to feature each month/etc.

Have you had a better Pirates gaming experience while using scenarios?  Do you enjoy trying to incorporate the characters and flavor text into your games?

The few and far between “official scenarios” never seemed to amount to much. Whatever story setup they included was often interesting, but didn’t really affect gameplay at out, outside of requiring players to use one or two specific game pieces in their fleets. Beyond that, players would still tend to go with whatever they normally used for fleets, and the game itself would play out much the same as it would without the scenario.

Playing with a “flavor-themed” fleet when not required to was usually pretty fun, and requiring all players to use single-nation fleets always makes the game more interesting, but it was pretty rare when that didn’t put you at a slight (sometimes not-so-slight) disadvantage against players using a wide open mixed fleet.

The best scenarios were the ones that really forced players outside of their comfort zones to do something completely different. I don’t recall any scenarios from WK ever doing that, but there have been more a few fleet challenges at MT over the years that did a good job with it.
