What is something “fancy” you like doing during games or that you are able to do?

One example I thought of is using all green dice from SCS to mark islands explored for the Jade Rebellion.  Though I think I only have a few of the tiny dice from that set.  It’s even harder because the Jades don’t have green pennants to use instead, so you’d need a handful of SCS packs to pull it off.

I suppose a common or super obvious one would be using a “play collection” and also having an unpunched collection.

I just thought of one that does apply to me – making pictures look right for battle reports.  Sometimes I purposely have the masts fall or angle a certain way to maximize the aesthetic nature of the chaos of battle.  (Command the Oceans spoiler alert) The bridge collapse in CTO was certainly one of the longest and most overdone picture sequences I’ve ever done in my games, but it was well worth it.

I don’t really do much ‘fancy’ stuff with my collection, other than leaving masts in the water for physical campaign games.

It’s a very open-ended question.  I would say your customs collection is rather impressive, since most people either don’t make any customs in physical form, and/or don’t find good uses for their duplicates.  You do both, which is neat.  Plus, some of the customs look pretty “fancy”, like the Triumph.  🙂

I have a double set of the old Gale Force Nine islands, which always get used in place of the generic cardboard ones that come in packs. They’re nice and solid, but still very low profile and only slightly larger than the standard ones so they don’t mess with table size and are easy to store/transport in the same containers as everything else.

I’ve also “edged” maybe a dozen of my ships. (Use Sharpies/markers to color in the white edges of the cards.) It makes them look really nice, but it’s also incredibly tedious work to get into all of the little nooks and crannies, particularly if you use multiple colors to match the artwork. You can see an example here, in this picture I’d taken years ago:

ADDED: Those red and white sticks you see in the photo are plastic drink skewers cut to length. It makes measuring a LOT quicker and easier, especially in tight spaces.

    Ok, this is painfully specific:

Next March, for my birthday, the party theme will be pirates. Nine of us will drive 45 mins one way to eat lunch at a Long John Silver’s (I can hear y’all LOL or groan as you read this), then return home to where I’ve readied the dining room table for a five-person Pirates CSG game (some friends don’t game but enjoy being viewers), fleets ready-built & to be assigned by random draw. At least (3) of the fleets will include a 10-mast ship (Baochuan – Delusion – Shui Xian – more if I can acquire them by then). The GF9 islands sets will be used and/or any custom ones I construct this Winter.

Oh yeah, and presiding over us will be a bunch of helium-balloon sharks and cephalopods.
And the cake will be topped with any Longships not used in the game fleets. 😉

    How’s that for “fancy?!”

That is fancy, and rather epic!  😀  Love the idea of a Pirates birthday party.  Looking forward to hearing about the game – I just used five 10 masters in my 6×150 game, and it was pretty great.

Ben, I got a lot of inspiration for the party from your & others’ epic games; got the idea for ships as cake toppers from the FB group; got the
idea to do a theme because I planned my husband’s 50th bday a couple months ago w/a dinosaurs theme. 😉

    Dinos rule. 😀

Nice ideas, I think myself and both of my brothers have had a pirates themed birthday, granted when were much younger and didn’t know about the game.

I realize this is an old thread, but I wanted to add that I’m looking at getting a couple sets of the GF9 islands. Also I found these great magnetic maneuver/range markers available on Etsy.

I just saw those the other day for the first time and they look pretty good!  My only concern would be exact/precise measurements from the ends of them.

You do not measure off the ends. There are divots on the sides, bisecting the magnets, that mark the movement/range distance.

Also, my wife & mother-in-law were kind enough to make me a custom, quilted playmat for Pirates! It looks FANTASTIC!

Makes sense now, thanks for the picture!  And nice quilt!  😀
