What kind of collector are you?
The Penny Pincher: Searches the internet and eBay for hours upon hours to save tens or hundreds of dollars. Possibly could have spent that time just making more money in the first place.
The Deal Hawk: Always on the lookout for good deals, rarely purchases anything. Often gets “deal of the year” type stuff. Usually the only things they DO buy are heavily discounted or an obscure find that blows everyone else’s frugality out of the water.
The Husband: Always mentioning how “the wife wouldn’t let me spend that much”. “Let me check with the boss first.” Has no agency over their own finances.
The Nostalgic Desperate Newbie: Just getting back into the game, sometimes trying to rebuild their exact old collection. Between being unaccustomed to semi-recent lower prices and being hyped for the game again, often willing to shell out exorbitant amounts to get started collecting again.
The Nice Guy: Posts about deals for everyone to see when they could have snatched them up for themselves.
The Player: Only seeks out what they will use in games and often has a “playset” of the best each faction has to offer.
The Completionist/Super Collector: Wants at least one of EVERYTHING. Busts, boxes, tattoos, inserts, one of each type of unopened product, wrappers, GF9 islands and booty finder, etc etc. This is a broad spectrum with “one of every playable game piece” on the “cheap” end.
The Hoarder: A type of “super collector” that buys quantity over quality. Likely prefers the mass quantity of a booster box of stuff they already have over a few pricey LE’s they don’t have. Often buys in bulk when things are on sale. Probably has multiple piles of unopened packs in various locations throughout their house. Boxes of duplicates have spilled out of their intended spaces and into adjacent rooms.
The Reseller: Buys product to resell. Some at a higher price, but others with very good deals to offer. Must spend ungodly amounts of time sorting ships and cards and processing orders picked out from a hoard.
The Nationalist: Only collects one faction.
The Packhead (instead of crackhead): Refuses to buy factory sets or bulk lots and simply buys packs until their sets are complete. Wizkids’ ideal customer.
The Ex-Employee: Has a gaudy collection they got (mostly?) for free from working for or with Wizkids back in the 2000’s.

Which ones are you now?  Which were you in the past?

Combination of Penny-Pincher, Deal Hawk and Player. Always have been, most likely will be. Eventually I’ll probably morph into super-collector.

Mostly this one, although it falls more toward the “cheap” end.   For a while I tried to get at least one of every playable piece (and multiples of generics, especially for the once-off factions), but beyond buying packs, some limited trading, and the rare direct purchase, I didn’t go out of my way to ensure I had 100% of everything.   I got a double set of the GF9 islands (two each of the two different sets) somehow for significantly less than MSRP, but can’t recall how or where anymore.

I also got several other incidental things like some of the busts and various other non-playable odds and ends, but never actively sought any of those out.   They either came direct from WK (see below), or were thrown in with trades or something.

This was certainly a factor around the middle ages of the game, but was wildly inconsistent.  I did get several factory sets, but they usually didn’t include the LE/SE items that weren’t part of the main set itself, and some sets got skipped entirely.

Almost as much of the “free” stuff I got from WK was for entirely different games.    I’ve got a nice Mechwarrior collection because of it, and acquired a bunch of other great board games in trade for HeroClix factory sets.

For the past year I’ve been a hoarder more than anything else.  XD

The Nostalgic Desperate Newbie is ringing a little true for me. I didn’t ever sell my collection, but I now find myself overly keen to play, watching the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, trying to drag friend in and paying what is probably waaaaay too much for 36 pack box sets. The shipping is the killer too.

Newbie is correct too, as I have no great expertise in the rules, the sets, ships, naval history… just unbridled enthusiasm to get back into a great game that I only stopped playing because the games club shut down.
