In the recent podcast with Mike Selinker, he revealed that the original rarity distribution was 8:5:3.  (for Common:Uncommon:Rare)

Although he said it probably changed over time, it seems consistent with the luck I’ve had opening packs.  It’s one of the things I like about Pirates actually – the rares aren’t as rare as they are in other collectible games (that I’ve experienced at least), which makes the game easier and more fun to collect.  (in my opinion)

What is your experience with the basic rarity distribution?  Do you think it remained around 8:5:3 for most of the sets?  (I feel that it did)

I’d have to agree it had to have stayed fairly close to that throughout the run.  There never has seemed to be a far off difference between rarities typically of what many other ccg’s I’ve played used. I think it’s helped non-Rares maintain their value for resale a lot better than the usual 1000’s of commons that seem to get junked in other games.
