What is the most underrated faction in Pirates CSG?
My vote would go to the Barbary Corsairs. Despite being an incredibly good faction and arguably the best minor faction, they seem to get much less love and respect than they deserve (excluding actual history). The Corsairs are so good at getting gold and fielding high-cargo swarm fleets that you can make a decent argument that they are not only better than the Cursed in small games, but nearly better than the Americans as well (in small games!). The Corsairs get a lot of hate because they “can’t fight”, which 1. isn’t true, and 2. doesn’t matter that much when the goal of the game is to finish with the most gold.
I also think the Pirates community at large underrates the French. This may be due to my exposure to Xerecs’ play group and other players who just don’t seem to understand that they can be as good (or better!) as any faction other than the Pirates if you play them right. There’s a great case to be made that they are the second best faction, although of course Spain and England are right there with them.August 16, 2019 at 3:21 PM #9075KarningulParticipant
I don’t think there’s any question that the Corsairs would be the answer to that question.
I’m not sure even the Pirates can match the sheer quantity of cheap, fast ships the Corsairs can put on the board. A ship that moves S+L with 4 cargo for 6 points is a great deal. Some factions (the Cursed say hi!) don’t even have a ship like that. The Corsairs got something like 4 or 5 ships with that kind of profile – and most of them have more than one mast! I wonder if collecting issues are really to blame – it’s hard to appreciate a fleet you can’t play, and finding the necessary generic crew for the Corsairs is like pulling teeth.August 16, 2019 at 5:20 PM #9076BenKeymaster

The Pirates can, but the Corsairs are rich.

Exactly why I love using simple pieces of paper with “Helmsman” (or H 2) on it. Saves a ton of money from having to open a lot of packs hoping for random little crew chips that are FAR easier to proxy for than named crew let alone ships. Corsairs for sure. They offer the most bang for your buck, but their named crew is very hit-and-miss and their ships are plagued with poor cannon ranks, which probably leads people to choose the Pirates over them.
My personal choice would be the Vikings. Though they lack any overly fast or durable ships, they certainly aren’t lacking in firepower, and they have several decent options for hybrids (way more than they do treasure runners, oddly). That being said, I’d hesitate to use them in a <60 point game, unless some Pirate and Corsair ships were called in to handle treasure running.
